Love it for roughing out

A great tool at a good value price (and you can improve it from there!)
Heavy, solid, stable, holds an edge. That sounds like the definition of a great woodturning tool to me! Well, that is what this is. If you are roughing in a bowl from a green, irregular tree section (for example) you will benefit from the heft. Tool life is great, and you will spend more time turning and less sharpening.Many experts recommend having a 1/2" bowl gouge as your largest in that category. I understand this and would generally agree. However, if you are working on big wood for big projects you may want or need something larger. In my personal opinion this is the upper limit. Crown makes a 1" version, which I do not own, but based on the mass of the 3/4" version would expect to be too cumbersome for all but the very largest jobs.All of my turning tools are either Crown or Sorby. I am happy with both brands. Therefore, if the specs (length, mass, thickness) are equivalent I lean toward Crown, as I do not see the point in paying more to get the same performance.
