The Art Book for Children Hardcover – October 1, 2005

I purchased this book for my kids who were 6 and 10 at the time. I was pleasantly surprised by the scope and variety of art covered in this book. Several well-chosen (nothing gory or disturbing to children) pieces of art are presented in nice, full color reproductions. The authors then point out various interesting things about the piece and ask fun questions about it. All of this serves to help children not just "look" at art, but to enjoy it and appreciate it.I heartily recommend this book for anyone who wants to dabble in art appreciation - not just children. It is so easy to read and thumb through that neither kids nor adults will realize they are learning about art. For those over 16 or so who want to take the next step, "The Art Book" is a great follow-up that features many, many more works with more scholarly comments on each.

The artwork so far was not what I expected. I expected more familiar pieces in there. But I've ordered some other art books that will have more of those in them. What I love about this book and feel it was a wonderful choice to add to our library is that as a homeschooling mom who is not an art major - was to have a book that would help guide me. Just on the first page the four seasons discussion and how it was presented prompted a long and fun and even surprisingly deep conversation between my 5 year old son and I. He is very artistic already. The book poised questions in a way to engage a child and bring art into their critical thinking. It shouldn't be your only art book. But it should be in your library if you have little ones. I also have Book 2 of this on my shelf.

The Art Book for Children has the potential to be one of those books your kids enjoy as children and remember in adulthood. It also has the potential to be a book children and parents bond over while developing an appreciation art for. It's a bit of a Wheres Waldo of art. The artworks are beautifully reproduced, the accompanying stories engaging.

The book looks wonderfull, I guess it will make a great gift for [...] (or their teachers). After the success of The Art Book it's to understand that PHAIDON Press is addressing youngsters (and their parents). For (almost) the same price, probably used, you may get The Art Book BUT ::: There's ALL ARTS in this edition, Nude too ...

This book, along with the Art Book for Children Book One, is a wonderfully imaginative collection of art. Each piece is complemented with great background on the work of art and interactive questions. This isn't an academic resource with a lot of historical or biographical detail, but one that will instill wonder in the reader (including adults). It is PERFECT for children, whether they love to draw or not, and for the folks who read these books to kids. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grannies and grandpas -- you'll be really thanked if you get these for the children in your life. Both of my girls, ages 5 and 9, love these two books. Buy them both!

Very well made as Phaidon usually delivers. I love the book. Would recommend for children probably 8 and up since all paintings have deep history that younger audiences can't grasp entirely. With an adult's participation (as it should be) the book is a blast to use.

I bought this book for my grandchildren, a boy and a girl ages 2 1/2 and 5. Not only are they thrilled with it, their parents are enchanted. This book should be read by everyone! It's a marvelous primer and guide to the world of art, with pictures of some of the world's most famous art treasures and amazingly interesting explanations of why these particular pieces have endured. If you want your children or grandchildren to learn about what makes art relevant, this is the book for them! It should be sold in every art museum in the world.My grandchildren have several other books about art, but none is as erudite and entertaining as this. Trust me, your children will learn some wonderful stuff . . . and so will you. I can't recommend it highly enough. Fabulous!

This is the book we have been looking for for a year -- a good overview of art for our children to give them exposure to many styles of paintings, and to get a chance to view famous paintings. We could not be more pleased. We looked high and low in all kinds of bookstores until finding this. The quality of the paper and printing is top-shelf, and the explanations of paintings and suggestions on how to talk with your children about them are equally high-level and useful. Well done Phaedron (publisher). I will shop your "house" in the future.
