my first Gardner read
Great story with lots of plot twists. Gritty but not gory. Interesting lead heroine. Loved the cat! Might be the best character in the book.

Before She Disappeared
Before She Disappeared by Lisa GardnerFrankie Elkin series #1. Mystery thriller. She’s just an average middle-aged woman who has made her life goal to find the missing people that most everyone else has forgotten. Frankie Elkin moves from town to town, working at a local bar or restaurant, asking questions and following up with friends and witnesses trying to find the missing.Frankie is in Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation. She is searching for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school. The more questions Frankie asks around the neighborhood, the more violence is stirred up. There are more questions for every answer she finds. Who knows the teen the best that may have some insight to where she would have gone? Did she leave voluntarily or is there more to the story?Tense and intriguing as Frankie questions reveal a tiny move forward. Frankie seems to have already accepted that she will one day wind up dead for asking the wrong person a question they don’t want to answer. Yet there is a spark of determination in her that you have to admire. Frankie is a recovering alcoholic which carries its own weight and issues. This seems to be a common theme by this author. For this particular story, it gives Frankie a strength and perseverance that you can’t help but applaud.

Enjoyed reading
I usually read books that have more violence, but I really liked this book. The words flowed nicely and in my minds eye I was able to visually see the characters.

As usual Lisa Gardner has presented interesting characters, plots and sub-plots
This is Book #1 introducing her new character Frankie Elkin. From my personal perspective, i just don’t enjoy books where the main character is an alcoholic, and much of the dialogue focuses on her battle with the demon. Her battle with booze grew tiresome.Gardner’s character development is excellent as always, and in this book she introduced an especially likable detective I grew fond of. Unfortunately, due to Elkin’s propensity to dash off to another missing person investigation, he isn’t likely to reappear. Too bad. I would gladly read more about him.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Kept me guessing.
Now knowing that there are people like the main character Frankie, who investigate cold missing person cases, at her own expense, is incredible. The danger and stress they put themselves in for people and families they have never met is truly brave and heartwarming. This book was well written and thought provoking. The characters were all genuine, likeable and believable,
