If they had worked, the SLW5s likely would have done what I need. But I received two in succession from the seller that did not work. That was not the seller's fault, and he did what he could to correct matters by sending a second unit when I returned the first. But both units had identical technical problems. There are lithium AAA batteries in the sensor units that are supposed to last 10 years or longer. (The battery date codes were more than 10 years in the future.) But they had been drained in both cases – to the point that one of the batteries in each unit had reversed polarity. Upon replacing the batteries with fresh ones for testing, the radio connection between the sensor unit and the receiver that goes into the Weathermatic controller (SmartLine SL1600 in this case) was made, but the sensor still did not go through any of the LED test sequence that it was supposed to do when initiated. Both units had the same date code (March 2015), so there was no way to tell whether the problem was due to a bad batch or a bad design.It is important to note that WEATHERMATIC HAS NO CONSUMER WARRANTY included in the paperwork accompanying the unit or available on line, and WEATHERMATIC HAS NO CONSUMER SUPPORT AVAILABLE. The only warranty, if any (terms of which are unspecified), is through the seller. The only support is through the seller, but the seller in this case got no response from Weathermatic, either.To make matters worse, when seeking a return through Amazon, the request is refused with the statement, "This item isn't eligible for return," which is explained as, "For safety reasons, items containing flammable liquids or gases can’t be returned to Amazon." There are no such liquids or gases in these units, and there is no reason they shouldn't be returnable through the U.S. Mail, just the same way they were delivered. The seller was unable to get Amazon to correct this. And just as importantly, there was no notice in the listing on the Amazon web site that the units are not returnable. BE WARNED!FAULT: Weathermatic; FAULT: Amazon. No Fault: Seller.
