I was hoping to replace a large old sandscape display which was unfortunately broken by a boisterous bull terrier. Unfortunately this item has failed to meet my expectations.My old sandscape was a true 30cm x 25cm display, this one is 30cm x 25cm total, though the sandscape image area is only 27cm x 22cm and the visible sand area on the "front" side is only 24.7cm x 19.8cm.The space between the glass panes containing the sand and water for this item is approximately 1mm to 1.5mm thick, the space between the two panes of glass was approximately 2mm to 2.5mm wide in my old display.Light is easily visible through the sandscape image due to the thinness of the internal area.The bubbles are also much more "pressed" against the inside area, making it more difficult for the sand pass between bubbles. I believe this is also why this display is designed not to stand on a true 90° vertical angle from horizontal, but rather rests on it's two little stands, with an offset lean angle. I believe this is so that the sand is forced to "slide" down the back surface.This offset angle means that any pyramid / mountain that forms is noticeably steeper than any that form in a true vertical sandscape display. It just doesn't look quite right to the eye, though it may be preferred by some people as a more "alien" landscape than what would normally form.However, due to the sand being filled past the 50% mark, it is really quite impossible to form a slow image with pyramids etc, as the fallen sand in the lower area below the bubbles will rise up to join with the sand above the bubbles, causing the entire display to fail to complete. The image will be frozen when the lower and upper sand meets, due to the bubbles no longer having the entire horizontal area in which to spread out.This means that the image really must make a "fast-collapse" sandscape, which almost always ends with a much smoother, softer, sand-dune type image with no real interesting "structures" to view.I know some people prefer this quick-to-complete type of image, however I do not.I much prefer putting on some Pink Floyd and zenning out to a display that takes around 20 minutes to form varied and interesting sandscapes, rather than a two-minute fast fall.My old display had soft plastic edging, whereas this display has no protection for the glass edging. I wouldn't be surprised if the edges were easily chipped while turning the display over.There are also multiple large grains or clumps which are stuck in place on the internal surfaces, remaining as blemishes in the "sky" or often blemishes in a white sand layer.Small sand pyramids often remain trapped, floating in the "sky" either on bubbles or on the immovable grains or clumps.Overall, a deeply disappointing and unsatisfying sandscape display generator.

Very pleasurable to watch sand shift to make new scene. This blue one looks like waves. Very nice.

Bought this as a gift and they loved it

My husband and I absolutely love it, it would be awesome if you bought out one that could flip automatically at selected intervals.
