Dubbed the 'man in black', guitarist Ritchie Blackmore found fame with 1970s rock giants Deep Purple. He then walked away from them to create Rainbow, only to abandon them and form another band in 1997 - Blackmore's Night. This book talks about his moodiness, his three marriages, the police chases and his passion for football. Review: Fabulous, thorough and interesting biography of a true guitar hero - This a thorough documentary of one of the world's greatest guitarists, covering his upbringing, session work, his close relationship with Joe Meek, spells in the Outlaws, Crusaders and with Lord Sutch, the sensational band that was Deep Purple, Rainbow and right up to the present day with Blackmore's Night. It also tells of a less well known few years in Germany in the Sixties. Showmanship, band politics, practical jokes, ghost stories, hiring and firing, songwriting, marriages and divorces, tales of speed and virtuosity are all told with a precision of detail. I especially liked the story of his upstaging of Clapton when Purple supported Cream in 1966. On that note, I consider Rolling Stone's placing of Ritchie at number 50 in the world's greatest guitarists as outrageous - only Hendrix and Beck are in the same league in my opinion. Incidentally, I saw him play live in Aberdeen, Scotland with Deep Purple in 1972 and again in 2006 in Sofia, Bulgaria, with Blackmore's Knight - both times he was phenomenal. A must for any fan of Ritchie or any of his musical troupes.

Good book, balance of sources, well structured
I get up listening to Rainbow and then found Deep Purple. Great insight into the man himself.

The Man in Black
