Odiris Stainless Steel Coconut Scraper (Model A8)

Before, I used to slip a knife between the coconut flesh and the shell to pry it out. That's a great way to stab and cut yourself. This takes some muscle power, but it's quick and easy -- and affordable, too. Updated after two years: This is the first tool of its kind I've ever owned, and it is still far and away easier and safer to use this than to try prying the coconut meat out with a knife. I've had it now for over a year, but I've only used it a handful of times. It's simple, relatively easy to use, and effective. I think it will become more effective the more I practice with it. Overall, I like it, and I'll continue to use it. That being said, I just took it out to use after a long time -- maybe even a year? -- and parts of the paint had rusted or flaked off. (See photo.) I've only hand washed it. It has been stored on a shelf with dry goods, with plenty of ventilation, in a very dry climate. I imagine if I used it more often, or if I lived in a more humid area, it would be worse. It doesn't affect any working parts as is, but if the paint continues to flake off, it will eventually. The other thing to watch out for is that if your counter has a lip on the underside (like mine does), it can be challenging to get a tight grip. And you certainly don't want anything slipping when you're putting your hands close to a whirring blade!

This has been a game changer in my kitchen in the caribbean. Set it up on its own little table so I have fresh coconut milk daily without having to spend time hacking away at coconuts and using my hand grater. The coconut comes out very finely grated, ready to squeeze in my mesh bag. I did a lot of research before buying this, comparing with other options…this was the best choice and I highly recommend it. My friends want one and I wish we could buy it directly from Odaris in Sri Lanka.

I am very excited to have this product in time for a trip to Haiti. My friend, who lives there, has to grate coconuts by hand. It takes an hour to grate, then she still has to make the coconut milk. Because coconut milk is a standard ingredient in many Haitian dishes, she spends a LOT of time grating coconut. I am hoping this device will save her a lot of time (and save her fingers ... and mine, since I help cook when I visit). The tool is sturdy and clamped very tightly to my granite counter. The opening looks wide enough to clamp to my friend's concrete counters but if not it will clamp on a table or they will make something for it. Thanks.

Arrived quickly, easy setup... the only reason it didn't get 5 stars was that it tends to work itself loose a bit and it takes a little longer that I anticipated to shred the coco's. That being said, now that I've received it and used it, I am just about to order another one of them.. if you've never tasted freshly shredded coconut; you gotta get this.. if you like shredded coconut in a bag from the store; that would rate about a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-10... freshly shredded is a true 10.. absolutely incredible.. and this machine makes it pretty easy to do.. I did 2 whole coconuts in about 15 minutes or so.. +/-..

I ordered this for my mother and when she received it, it had no blade protector with it. It is very difficult to screw the blade assembly onto the stand without it. Storing it is gonna be fun without it as well.

Wonderful device! The clamp works well on my Corian countertop to stay secure in place. The padding on upper portion of the clamp protects the surface and the "adjustable" lever gives both flexibility and leverage to tighten it by hand easily. The blades are sharp so a hand glove to protect your hand is highly recommended. The wooden handle gives a good grip to turn and it took hardly any time to grate the entire coconut. It's wonderful. It tightens up real nicely to my granite counter-top (I used pliers to make sure it would not loosen) and it is a cinch to clean. It grinds coconut really nice and it only took me 2-3 times to get the hang of it. And who doesn't love fresh coconut?

This is definitely a necessity if you work with coconuts. It's easy and fast. Works as a charm

Amazing product. Does its job so easy compared to other products I used when in the Philippines. Bit expensive but worth it. Every house must have this especially if you don't want to use the coconut milk/cream in tin where there's a lot of unhealthy ingredients . I have not bought can milk/cream since I own this grater. I would recommend this product.
