Dearest Mother: First World War Letters Home from a Young Sapper Officer in France and Salonika

Completely absorbing.
It's a fascinating read, because here are very personal yet almost trivial upbeat letters home from an evidently "jolly good chap" making light of work which was almost certainly carried out in absolutely hellish conditions. Laying out the book with his letters on the right page, and an explanation of the reality of what was going on at the time on the facing page, was inspired. Perhaps his innocent matter-of-fact writings provide an insight into how a person could mentally get through all the horrors day after day, year after year, without respite: he just focused on what he was there to do, got on with it, and took genuine pride in doing it well, even though his meticulous constructions might be blown to bits at any time. A very different and uniquely personal record of war: I was totally absorbed from start to finish.

An ideal book for holidays and long flights
I much enjoyed this young officer's accounts of his experiences on the Western Front and Salonika, especially the latter campaign. I had not realised until now what a significant contribution this had made to the allies' final victory. Very well presented, with excellent notes. I would strongly recommend this as a fascinating and informative read. An ideal book for holidays and long flights.

An excellent read
An excellent read. Puts a lot of WW1 into perspective along side the blood-and-guts stories that we are continually fed. I particularly liked the layout whereby the letters are on the recto and an explanation of the situation on the verso.Left me wanting to ask the authors many questions about both John and his mother
