Eloquently written with amazing craft.I am not a fan of books relating to drug abuse or "that time I got high" type of stories, but Shusterman (and Shusterman) have done it again! They have taken a topic I don't much care for and used their brilliance to make it different, memorable, and emotional.The drug personification is such an interesting take on how addiction holds people, the characters are all extremely well developed, and the secret messages are excellent. The interludes are interesting snippets of other drugs that may or may not pertain to the core story (oh that interlude 6....ohh....).I had to revisit chapter 1 after I finished the book, and my heart was pounding with sad satisfaction at the end. Amazing, amazing, amazing!

The best book I have ever read in my life, it is a complete masterpiece of literature, it is far better than I ever imagined.

This book was really good. And I really didn't enjoy it. As someone who has lost people both literally and figuratively to drugs, it was a hard read.Ivy and Isaac are brother and sister. And one of them is going to die.Isaac starts taking oxy for an injury. Ivy starts taking Adderall with the hopes that if she can focus, she can graduate high school on time. Roxy and Addison, the drugs manipulating their brains, are in a competition to see who can take their patient to the VIP room first.This book was interesting and educational and tragic. The drugs are their own characters. And you get to know how they work and why they can make you do the things you do. They give a name to that voice inside your head that tells you what you should and shouldn't be doing. It could be Roxy or Addison. Or maybe it's Al(cohol) or Mary Jane or Lucy (in the sky with diamonds).It gives you insight in to the struggle of the addicted and why the pull is so strong.I've read a lot of books that I didn't want to end. But this was the first time that I didn't want to know how one ended.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. As a high school teacher who has watched too many teens travel the road these characters are on, I can tell you this book was both terrifying and unbelievably authentic. If you have teens in your life, read this...and have them read it too. I have loved every Shusterman book I've ever read, but this one is special. It has power to open up eyes to a very evil temptation.

Usually love Shusterman. Usually love allegories, but this one wasn't for me. Maybe would be more meaningful for someone who has struggled with addiction or has lost someone to addiction. Fortunately, that is not I. I can see how it could be helpful to others though.

This book really does a great job of showing the slow slippery slope that addiction is for kids and young adults. Other reviewers are a bit harsh because the two drugs competing in an American gods esque bet are Oxycontin and adderall. But this book does a great job showing the similarities between the two ( I think they were chosen because they may be over prescribed at different points). It's such a good read so worth it. I understand the people saying that Adderall helps them but it's so worth reading.

This book is a wonderful representation of addiction and I absolutely love it, it shows just how fast addiction can take hold.

ending left me sad but i rlly did enjoy the book throughout and the interludes were the best. cool view on the opioid epidemic

I recommand you have a liste with all the drugs name while reading this book! It help me understand the book, that by the way is SO SO GREAT!!!!!
