4 Stars But Should Be 3
The first half of this book is fantastic. It does a great job at explaining the function of insulin and the mechanics of digestion. The best I’ve seen, to be honest. But some of the recipe ingredients are very concerning. For example, many recipes use honey. If I used raw honey in a recipe, the pure sugar will make me crash and feel sick the rest of the day. She also uses a lot of high nutrient ingredients, like almond flour. Although that will help slow digestion, it will also help pack on the pounds. Maybe the science has changed and the recipes are starting to show their age. I will make many of them, but will definitely change ingredients to more healthful substitutes. Readers who don’t know how to do this on their own will be at a loss. Perhaps a more recent book would be a better choice for them.

Excellent So Far
I went on a search recently for cook books that could help me reverse a few lingering bad food habits. Of the books I surveyed, this is the most immediately useful that I found, in creating a fresh start. The author’s approach is practical, empathetic, informative, and refreshingly brief. She explains without belabouring her points, which makes it easier for the reader to get onto the action plan, with less guilt, than is often found in a “put down the pastry and pick up that carrot” eating plan/cookbook. Such a relief. I love that she has shopping lists broken into weeks, along with recipes. The organization is mostly very thorough.A few notes for future editions: don’t forget to include zucchinis in the shopping list when the recipe is served over zucchini noodles; maybe use a better paper stock, because the pages don’t like to get wet, at all; author, please address the issue of allergies and substitutions for commonly used items like almonds. (I know, it’s a slippery slope, and you trust us to use our noggin.)In general, if you’re trying to lose weight, or address an insulin issue, this book warrants a glance, in my opinion. I’m just getting started, but I’m encouraged. Ms. Spencer’s book is a great contribution and tool, and I appreciate it.

Expensive and time-consuming
I wanted so badly to give this book at least four stars, but the first week (July 2024) cost me $137.00 here in New Mexico, in a normal, everyday supermarket. The Ginger Rice Noodle recipe took forever to chop, cut, slice, and sauté, taking well over an hour to prepare. I enjoy cooking, but this was no weekday supper! Some of the recipes are high calorie and have a carbohydrate level higher than what I'm supposed to have at each meal, so one wonders how the recipes were developed.

Well rounded and very helpful for getting healthier, not just for diabetics!
This is a really well-rounded resource for anyone trying to get healthier, but especially for the many of us that either currently struggle with blood-sugar issues, or come from a family history of issues. The information is very accessible. I think most of us know by now what our blood sugar problems ARE but if you have any doubt what's going on "behind the scenes" in your body, this book can help you understand and then give you some no-nonsense ways to start getting on the right track. The recipes are good , though I haven't made them all. I'm a big fan of ginger and chicken, so the Ginger Rice Noodles with Chicken is right up my ally.I also really like the "plan" that it lays out, and the index for finding things easily. It's a great book for addressing a common health ailment in western society: sugar problems.I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review, and I'm really glad. I may not have given it a chance without knowing what was inside, and I believe it's going to be a very useful resource in my life.

This is how we were meant to eat
This book is just what I was looking for. It starts with a good explanation of insulin resistance and how to use food to combat it. It ends with several tables of information that is useful for creating my own recipes. In between there are lots of yummy recipes. Yes they are a bit labor intensive, lots of chopping... but that’s how it is when cooking with fresh ingredients. If you are looking for an easy fix for your insulin, go to a doctor and get meds. But if you want to let your body work as it should on it’s own, it’s well worth the effort. My husband and I, both on our late 60s are feeling healthier after just a few weeks of eating like this.

Very Helpful!!
My husband is diabetic and has been experiencing some kidney issues recently. We were told to reduce the amount of protein in his diet. We began looking for leaner protein recipes and vegetarian recipes. We also needed help with food varieties and meal planning. We have studied this book cover to cover and found something useful in each chapter. Not only are the recipes new and exciting they are also made with some ingredients that are new to us.What makes this book a real asset are the meal plans (up to four weeks), the shopping lists, list of pantry staples and the list (and explanation) of essential tools and equipment. Certainly makes making diet adjustments easier!I have prepared several recipes in this book including toasty oatmeal pancakes, chicken barley soup, red lentil curry and cauliflower-pecan fritters. We have loved each one and look forward to having it again. We appreciate the time and effort Tara put into making this an outstanding book!I received this product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Great book but could be better
It is a great book in terms of educating the reader about insulin resistance. The theory parts of the book is excellent however, recipe part of the book could be better. After all it is a cook book. There are no visual representation of the finished recipe on the page, you will have to blindly imagine how it looks like.
