Written twenty years ago (2001), ‘Storm Catchers’ grips from the very start. The abduction of the young girl sends shock-waves down wherever they’re meant to go, whilst Fin, the guilt-ridden brother, kindles the story line with his discovery of the hair and the pendulum. A far-flung supernatural dimension, the ghostly storm catching girl, wraps around the psychic sensitivity of the littlest of the Parnell family, Sam, whose perilous flights towards the cliff edge never cease to alarm. Psychic, yes, but psychological too, in the powerful treatment of a man - won’t say who - trying to exonerate his guilt over wrongdoings years before.Beyond the shame liberally sprinkled over the family’s heads and the vicious cackling of the Furies in the storm clouds above the lighthouse, Tim Bowler is interested in the way redemption can kick in to rescue the fallen wrongdoer. Ricky, in this context, triggers that process in ways that show how totally in charge the author is in the adult world of money-greed, cupidity and blackmail. Complicated themes are all couched in a framework of seascape and adventure with everyone somehow pulling through into a calmer world, somewhat unconvincingly, at the end. But this is a fine YA novel with testing topics for discussion and a compelling storyline. Spread the news!
