SMH10D-10 Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset/Intercom Communication System (Dual)

This was a great purchase for my wife and I, and I am very pleased with it. The quality of sound is good and it functions great with my iPhone which I also use as my GPS on my motorcycle. The variable volume is more than adequate to hear while riding on the bike and my pipes are not quiet. We use them as a intercom between my wife and I and they work great we do not use them to speak to other riders. We also use them as communication via our iPhones and they work very well, so much so that when we are riding the party on the other end didn't realize I was even on the bike. Just make sure that you have the latest firmware once you get the unit. Changing the firmware and setting up the system was easy and I would highly recommend this unit to others. REVIEW UPDATE: It has now been about a year and half and the headsets are still working great! I have had them is all types of weather from blistering heat, to freezing cold and pouring rain and they still function well and sound terrific. I never had any issues and have updated the firmware several times as new updates have come out. I now have a Samsung Note 2 and although I am still playing with its functions with relation to the headset, I can say it is working well. My previous iPhone 4 worked very well with the headset and I used the iPhone and now the Note 2 as my GPS on the bike as well. When speaking on the phone the person on the other end rarely if ever knows I am on my bike and the units switch easily from phone to intercom to GPS to music. The jog dial wheel is very easy to work with gloves on, even winter riding gloves. I still consider this a good and smart purchase and I am still very pleased with them.

I’m updating my original review from 2 stars to 5. See my original review, below. I ended up repurchasing this dual pack of communicators and have been using them for more than a year. I enjoy long battery life and like being able to talk to my riding buddies. When riding, I can accept calls and people don’t even know that I’m riding. I have one on my full-face helmet and a second one on my half-shell helmet. I really enjoy having them and have determined that one of my riding buddies, with whom I tested my original set, didn’t have his microphone placed high enough in his helmet which is why I couldn’t understand him and usually only heard wind. I still can’t understand him but I have no problems with other riders so it must be his set-up. Great product that works as expected and I really enjoy listening to music when riding. Original review: I purchased these headsets based on positive reviews. I used them on 2 rides; performance with the telephone was good. People that I spoke to said they could hear me well. I was also able to listen to music and GPS directions. The bike-to-bike intercom feature, however, left much to be desired. I think that we could have shouted at one another and been heard better than we were when using the communicator devices. I'm not sure what the issue was: when we were off the bikes, we could hear fine. But riding the bikes at any speed over 25 mph presented serious challenges to hearing one another -- from almost any distance (as close as 10 feet); both of us use full-face helmets yet there was a tremendous amount of wind noise and my buddy sounded very, very distant. I contacted Sena and they were helpful in providing suggestions like resetting the units to a factory setting and updating the software. Unfortunately, I was unable to perform these updates and have an opportunity to ride with my buddy to try them out before owning the units beyond the time for which they could be returned. Moreover, I'm not sure why brand-new units should require a reset or software update. Over the past few days, I did a search for problems with Sena headsets and, despite the great reviews here, I found a lot of information relating to Sena failures and a lack of product support from the manufacturer. In addition to emailing Sena, I also called them. Strangely, I couldn't understand very much of the person was saying -- it was like he was using a phone that kept cutting in and out. As a result of Sena's instructions to reset the units, the unintelligible response from Sena's telephone customer service and the negative information about Sena units and the lack of customer support, I returned the items to the seller. I still want communicators but if these are among the best, the technology leaves a great deal to be desired. We expected a lot better performance and usability.

When you have a good, no Great product, everyone raves about the positives, even if it seems to make for repetitious reviews. I ordered the Sena SMH10D-10 and it arrived within a few days. I thought the documentation was easy to read and firmware update was simple to perform on the computer. My headsets came pre - linked which was nice. Installing the mounting platform was easy. The rubber padding preventing any damage to the helmet (wife's helmet has custom paint) and both sets worked like a charm on initial testing. Riding on a Harley with Loud pipes, the conversation and cell phone was crystal clear. I also liked that the jog dial is large enough to control with gloves on, yet not really obtrusive and responded to mild pressure when changing channels. In vox mode I didn't have to initiate talk with puff of air across the mike. It went silent and activated when I began speaking without cutting out the first few words. Being skeptical at first, having tried other makers units which failed miserably, I was pleasantly surprised upon discovering we could still hear each other over pipes, wind noise and road noise without any distortion or feeling like you had to yell. At high speed we did encounter some noise from my wife's full face shield. The phone connection to Android took seconds and blue tooth was almost instant. I have an older Garmin nuvi GPS so there was a minor connecting problem...takes some finesse and I felt it was no big deal. Another great feature is it's backwards compatibility with other intercom makers. So if your riding buddies aren't as up to date as you are, you can still keep them in the conversation. Comes with individual 12 volt chargers, wires, clips and ear buds for each headset. I also discovered if by chance you're out using it for more than 12 hours or don't have access to a power station, using an auxiliary cell phone charging battery works perfect. I do feel it's a great purchase which met all my expectations and then some. As said, I've tried several others but none have achieved their operating claims or surpassed them as the Sena SMH-10D did. It's the best one out there. Thanks! Communication has really improved my ride.

I am happy with the performance of this intercom; I give the performance 5 stars, but there are a few rough edges that cause me to give it 4 stars overall. I use it with Garmin Zumo 590 GPS, Apple iPhone (with Garmin app and Pandora), and SiriusXM radio, and all work and play well together. When mounting the mic clamps (provided with this item and also available separately as Sena SMH-A0301 Helmet Boom Microphone Clamp Kit) I discovered you can crack the mic clamp (cracks horizontally on either side of the electrical contacts port opening), if you deform it in any way when you tighten the clamp screws. The mic clamp material is plastic. An 'extra plastic shim piece' is provided that can be used to add thickness to the body of the mic clamp. If the clamp does not fit the exact contour of your helmet I recommend using the additional plastic shim provided. The 'extra plastic shim piece' has double-sided tape on it and can be used without the thin metal clamp and screws that are discussed in the instructions as the preferred method of mounting. You have to replace the provided two screws with longer ones so you can use the 'extra plastic shim piece' along with the thin metal backing clamp - this is what I did and recommend, if your helmet has a contour that deforms the mic clamp in any way when you tighten the clamp screws, or the mic clamp will eventually crack. (If the mic clamp cracked while riding the intercom would almost surely fall out of the mic clamp.) One of mine developed cracks after being installed for two weeks without cracking - crack detected before riding). The provided screws for the thin metal clamp (that goes inside the helmet) are M3 about 8mm long. The longer screws (not provided) that are needed to use with the thin metal clamp and the provided 'extra plastic shim piece' need to be around 12mm long. (I had and assortment of socket head M3 screws on hand I and didn't measure the exact length I used.) My experience with SENA Customer Service was excellent and they replaced my cracked mic clamp under Warranty. I have read reviews that describe that the SENA intercom - when used so that it is installed (snapped into place) and un-snapped from the mic-clamp every time the bike is stopped - as eventually developing problems with the electrical contacts. This is surprising because the contacts are high quality gold plated type. From my experience so far, I believe there are two reasons people may experience these electrical contact problems: 1) As I have described above, if the mic clamp is deformed in any way, it affects how the electrical contacts mate up when the intercom is snapped into the clamp. If when you un-snap the intercom (to remove it), and it is at all difficult, this is an indication that the mic clamp is deformed and flattened more than it should be - I would expect some type of problem to develop. (Until mine eventually cracked, I didn't have an electrical contact problem.) 2) Unrelated to any deforming of the mic clamp, When you snap and un-snap the intercom from the mic clamp there is a lower tongue on the intercom that fits into a slot on the mic clamp to provide the lower retention mechanism. This tongue in slot system provides excellent retention, but it does not guide the intercom into the mic clamp so that the upper snap lines up perfectly. As a result, you may apply side pressure, toward the front or back of the helmet, on the intercom to get the upper snap to align while you are pushing in on it to get it to snap in. Repeatedly putting side pressure on the contacts (to align the upper snap) while pushing in on the intercom will eventually damage the contacts. If you look to align the upper snap before you rotate it toward the helmet to snap it in place, you can snap it into place without putting any side pressure on the electrical contacts, and prevent any damage to them. Granted it would have been great if the SENA design engineers had been able to foresee this problem but all in all I believe they did a good job. I believe engineering relied too heavily on the high quality of the contacts to prevent this problem with possibly applying side pressure while attempting to snap in. I also believe that using a little care to align the upper snap before rotation the intercom toward the helmet, and into place, will prevent this problem.

If you ride with a buddy, you don't know how much you need these things until you have them. They mount to any full-face helmet very well (either with adhesive or clip - both are supplied) and as long as you tuck the boom up into the helmet, the sound quality is superb - when people call me they don't even know I'm riding! They're loud enough even with earplugs, a loud thumper and a loud ADV-style helmet. On the road, they work for at least 500ft - more than enough range for riding with a buddy. Range is reduced if you're on the other side of a hill or forest. If you need longer range, pair your phones to the sets and you two can just call each other - that works fine too. The mounting process is simple enough - you may need a small allen key to take off the clip to easily slide it into the underside of your helmet. Some helmets have little patches underneath their lining to accommodate the speakers - others don't and you have to use the included adhesive. Either method works just fine and I haven't had any speakers fall off. Since you're mounting the speakers underneath the lining, you never have to worry about them when putting the helmet on. The buttons are superbly useable even while wearing gloves. When trail riding, occasionally a branch knocks the button and ends the intercom, but it's a simple single button-press to get it back again. If you go down hard and the left side of your helmet goes into the road or a log or something you might break the intercom unit - I would think about putting some kind of shield over it before taking it on an enduro. However, it's fairly compact and seems very sturdy. The "brain" of the intercom (the part that requires charging) comes off easily and is reinstalled with a snap so you don't have to bring your whole helmet to wherever you charge this thing. I love the fact that you can order additional mounting kits that allow you to easily transfer the intercom units between helmets without redoing all the speaker mounts on the inside of the helmet padding. They work great!

Sound quality for music is lame, but the intercom feature is cool and works well for a group ride. If you want just sound and blue tooth function with your phone there are better on the market.

Ordered two sets mounted them and they’ve been working great for the past couple years

I use this on a Shoei RF-1100 and my GF uses it on her Bell Vortex. They work great on both platforms. I ride a 2008 Triumph Sprint ST 2-up with my girlfriend. We wanted to be able to talk to each other during our rides. The change in riding with a communications device is incredible. I would tell anyone considering ANY type of product to go for it. It is so nice to be able to tell her what I am about to do instead of beginning the maneuver and letting her feel the change. I started out with the speakers in my helmet and wearing earplugs. The speakers were loud enough for me to hear her in excess of 70mph. I tried it with and without earplugs and it was easier to hear her with the earplugs. The earplugs muted some of the wind and white noise so she became clearer. During our first ride together with the headsets, we paired them with our phones (an iPhone 4S and a Motorola Atrix) and they worked great. We were able to talk on the phones individually, in groups (basically like a 3-way call), and/or talk to each other while riding. While riding, I was able to make numerous calls and send texts using Siri. Callers said they could hear me fine while riding. I made calls at highway speeds (70+mph) and had no problems with call quality. Everyone I asked said the helmet sounded better than the Bluetooth in my car. Most folks didn't know I was riding until I told them. I had heard so many bad things about bluetooth headsets that I had been back and forth about spending the money for a year or more. I wish I hadn't waited. The only problem I had was listening to music. It simply wasn't loud enough for me. The first time I rode solo, I couldn't get the volume loud enough. I do have some hearing loss, so it might be ok for some. I bought the Sena kit that lets you use earphones and that solved my issues. I have a nice set of noise-isolating headphones that do a good job of letting me hear things like sirens, but block a lot of wind noise. Using those and the Sena is perfect. It takes a few more moments to put the earphones in instead of earplugs, but I love it. I don't ride now without turning on the Sena. EDIT: I forgot to mention the battery life. The first ride was 6 hours of mixed use with the intercom always on. The batteries lasted fine. We continued to use them for a couple of days of short rides afterwords. I figure we could get 8 hours out of them.

I had read many reviews about the Sena and the Scala, but for me the deciding factor was seeing a friend's Sena and noticing and marveling at the quality build and the ease of use. It's true that it takes about 5 minutes to install. The clamping system worked perfectly with my Arai full-face helmet. I like the option of being able to add an insert to bring the speakers closer to my ears. Pairing the Sena with my IPhone 5 was as simple as pairing any other device. I have not had the opportunity to pair my Sena with another Sena, but it shouldn't be a problem. As for the performance, the sound quality is clear as can be. As for functionality, I can send/receive phonecalls, texts, and emails by pressing one button and using Siri to help me find the contact & dial the contact; type the text/email, read it back to me for verification, and send the text/email. How cool is that?! Selecting and playing music is equally easy. I simply call up Siri and tell her to play an album/artist or tell her to play an artist and shuffle. It couldn't be easier. Music sound quality is dependent on how quiet your helmet is. My helmet is not as snug-fitting as it once was so I have too much wind-noise on the highway to hear the music as clearly as I would like. However, as others have said about phonecalls in reviews, you can be rolling down the highway at 100 KPH OR 60 MPH talking on the phone and the caller will be surprised when you say you are on your motorcycle because the sound quality is so clear. I look forward to being able to use the intercom during the big trip this summer so my friend and I can talk about the ride, warn each other of sudden hazard (e.g. Deer!), discuss route changes, or coordinate lunch/bathroom breaks. Simply put, the product performs as advertised and is the perfect accompaniment to an IPhone with Siri for assisting your communications.

Purchased this product at the same time as a family member purchased the single unit so that we can all use them at the same time. Excellent quality and sound and nice to be able to have a 3 way conversation. Once initial paring was completed the units pair very easily. However, one unit became faulty just outside of the 30 day return policy. Amazon have replaced the entire set up free of charge and fuss free. Would recommend this product to anyone looking for excellent quality intercoms. Worth spending a little extra on than some of the cheaper alternatives.

El radio funciona excelente y permite conversar con otros pilotos sin interferencias a una distancia relativamente larga: unos 300 metros, aunque la publicidad dice que hasta 900 metros. Lo compré para reemplazar unos radios con un alcance mucho más corto y funcionan excelente!

The sound is nice and clear even with the engine running

Auch wenn schon was älter von der Entwicklung, bietet es das was ich gesucht habe zuverlässige und stabile Anbindung an eine Garmin zümo und mein iPhone. Grundsätzlich ein besseres SMH5 mit Mikrofon-Boost aber ohne FM Radio über das ich mich ärgern muss. Gegenüber dem SMH5 muss kein Kabel abgezogen werden, wenn man das Gerät aus der Halterung nimmt. Halterung und Lautsprecher waren in 15min an meinem Dainese Airstream Course Helm montiert. Kann dank festem Schwanhals-Mikrophon nun jederzeit auf einen Klapphelm wechseln. Habe das Dualpack zu einem Superpreis über Warehouse Deals bekommen ... freu.
