Can I connect this directly into a console mixer?

No. You will need the transmitter and receiver. The mic plugs into the transmitter, the transmitter transmits to the receiver and the receiver plugs into your mixer.

Is there a best practice on how to adjust this to your ear in a way that's secure?

I had to do this. Slide the rubber tube so that it sits over and behind your ear. Bend the end (with the end piece) around your ear so that it is in front of the ear lobe. Then to get the mic end closer to your face push the bottom (the ear lobe end) closer to your head. It takes a little practice and some thinking backwards, but this should help.
