Very well written and well researched
Engaging; short and succinct chapters; clearly well researched and sourced. Explains many dynamics of growth and emergence very clearly, and doesn’t fall into simplistic traps of claiming everything is geopolitics, it’s all some centrally planned plot, etc — nuanced account of development in many markets and from many angles.

The Ultimate Book for TikTok
TikTok has had such a cultural and important impact - and this book encapsulates it so well. Chris is one of the (if not the) top journalist on internet culture and this book is the extension of that. He understand the platform so well and is able to articulate it into a way that anybody can understand. If you are interested in the world of media, technology or the future - this book is for you.

Too general
I bought the book after reading an article in the Guardian about TikTok. The article referred to this book and it sounded insightful. The only interesting part in the book, I am afraid to say, is chapter14 "The secrets of success". Th erest reads like a collection of blogs, newspaper articles and interviews. More a tell the tale than an insightful reading. I know the author is well accomplished and writes for the Guardian and Wire - but sorry - this book didn't fulfill my expectations.

Strong coverage of a phenomenal company that sits across technology media and entertainment
Strong coverage of the TikTok from the origin story, technology, talent and influence culture. The author covers a significant amount of ground from the origins of the founder, the struggles to get the app off the ground, the power of the algorithm, influencers and culture and the Trump administrations attempt to have the app banned. This is 100% worth a read for anyone interested in technology, media and entertainment
