a great album indeed
back in the 90's I brought this album when they had all kinds of music stores where you could go and see and purchase music. I lost this album in a home flood. Thanks to amazon I have this album back. I am a lover of smooth jazz and I listen to it when I am cleaning my home or during a work out. a great album indeed.

One of Carlton's all-time great solos
I first heard this album while working at a geology field camp in SE Alaska.Even at ultra-low fidelity (remember those rectangular-shaped mono tape recorders?),the incredible Larry Carlton solo on "And Then There Was the Blues" really grabbedme. I rate that solo up there with the classic Steely Dan-Carlton solo Kid Charlemagne. This is still one of my favorite Crusaders albums.

Great album. One of the last albums of the original Crusaders.

they set a few things right with this album
after "chain reaction", this album brought this group firmly into the R&B and Pop categories. If you're a Crusaders fan. you simply must have this one. they corrected a few errors with this album. Just get it, sit back and enjoy!

This is the Crusaders at their best, the wonderful mix of funky
This is the Crusaders at their best, the wonderful mix of funky, gospel, and post bop that only they could pull off. Sophisticated music that goes right to your gut!

If you like The Crusaders 1, The Second Crusade, Hollywood, StreetLife, etc - you will love this.
Those Southern Knights was The Crusaders 8th album released in 1976.The Crew Wayne Henderson - trombone Wilton Felder - tenor saxophone Joe Sample - keyboards Stix Hooper - drums, percussion Larry Carlton - guitar Robert "Pops" Popwell - bass Arthur Adams - guitarDeep in their prime period, the Crusaders reaffirm their affinity with the groove and rely entirely upon all six of their funky selves for their material .Here, we still have the Crusader's classic lineup: Wayne Henderson, trombone, Wilton Felder, tenor sax, Joe Sample, keyboards, Stix Hooper, drums, Pops Popwell, bass and Larry Carlton, guitar. Each note, each chord is placed with almost somnambulistic sureness. A good choice of songs. "Keep that same old feeling" is probably the best known track on this album as it was a twenty hit. "My Mama Told Me So" and "Feeling Funky" contain the most infectious outcropping of the groove, "And Then There Was the Blues" is a laid-back, mildly funky jog at quite some length, where everyone gets a chance to solo extensively; essentially this is the old Jazz Crusaders frontline sound with a funky underbelly. "Til the Sun Shines" is an urbane Larry Carlton ballad with synthesized strings, quite different and to the point, The song SPIRAL may be the best £1 you spend in your whole life. Larry Carlton's guitar work is perfection. This is truley a rare track where everyone gets to showof their stuff without the song becoming a collection of players trying to out shine each other. The Crusaders' groove machine is still very much in gear.

Real 70s cool.
The best from a truly special band of 70s jazz blues musicians.

You can almost smell the vinyl - a classic album.
A classic seventies album that never sounds dated. Album includes great solos by all the line-up and the distinctive keyboards of Joe Sample. Also some fine guitar work by Larry Carlton. Really a prelude of what would go on to emerge from these artist in the eighties and onward. Unfortunately though this edition was not the best quality recording which was spoiled by several jumps and digital freezes.

I love the Crusaders and this was bought because I could not find the one I had. Still sounds as brilliant as ever. Driving rhymes and horns, with great bass and drums. They were the Greatest Jazz/jazzfunk/jazzrock Band of the 70's and 80's. This CD is no exception.
