IK-10 Insul-Knife

Wish I bought this 25 years ago!
I've done several insulation projects with a utility knife & a straight edge with poor results that take forever.Bought this & will never go back!Cuts a 24" x 36' roll in half with about 15 strokes. Lines are near perfect! We'll worth the $30. I did sharpen it before use and a few times in between rolls. Doesn't tear the fiberglass or paper. Excellent tool & saves a ton of time with great results.

Cuts like butter on Pink & Paper
I saw some people mention specifics where it doesn't work, but I have had tremendous success using it with your standard craft faced pink insulation.I have found the best way to cut it is to have the insulation on edge, craft side facing you. Kinda knotch it in using the part nearest the handle, pull it all the way back in that knotch, and then pushing in somewhat at a down angle so that the tip is at the bottom and then pulling back so that you try to get through it in a single pass. The cut is ypically clean, no lose fibers around and you didn't have to compress it cut it which essentially reduces the insulation value like when you use a utility knife. If for some reason you get up to two passes to cut it still seems to work fine, but if your sawing away at it like it is a piece of wood ... you are probably done for and it may not work well with your application.Make sure not to lose the cover that comes with it because it is easy to get cut (not deep by my experience but annoying like a severe papercut) with out it.

Did not work for Ultra Touch--at ALL
We purchased this tool to cut Ultra-Touch denim insulation, at the recommendation of the insulation manufacturer. I read all of the reviews here on Amazon and noted that they were very mixed, and some reviews said it worked only if it was very sharp. Well, our Insul-Knife was razor sharp when it came, and it mostly just smashed down the insulation. It took about 6 really hard swipes to cut through the insulation, and even then it did not do a very good job. So even though ours was sharp (dangerously so, almost) it didn't work at all for the Ultra Touch.I can see that this would work really well on rigid foam insulation, so now I have to find someone who's gonna need to cut a bunch of that and give them this tool, which is useless to me. Major disappointment.

This Is A Must Have Tool for Cutting Insulation
This knife is such a time saver. I just completed hanging 2500 sq ft of fiberglass kraft faced insulation. I previously had used a utility knife and straight edge until somebody recommended this insulation knife. It cuts through insulation like butter and makes cutting straight edges by free-hand a breeze. I found it best to put the faced insulation on the floor with the kraft face facing up. This way you cut through the paper first and then breeze through the fiberglass. If you put the kraft paper facing down, the paper tends to tear instead of cut. You definitely to sharpen the blade regularly. I bought the AccuBlade Sharpner that was recommended on the Amazon site to be used with the knife. Both are easy to use and must have tools for anybody that is hanging lots of blanket or batt insulation.

Productive tool
This thing goes through craft paper insulation like a knife through butter. I've been stacking up seven R-15 batts at a time and cutting right through them. Then as I hang the batt I just put a little slice through the fiberglass to deal with the electrical wires. What a timesaver. The sheath that comes with it require some patients as it fits very tight. But it does serve it's purpose.

Not even close
No idea how this is working for others. It just doesn't work, I can get it started but the amount of effort to cut the insulation is so time consuming. i just went and bought the cheap home depot serrated knife and it works way better. Plus it was 10 bucks.i was dissapointed I missed the return date so I paid 40 now for a insulation kibfes over 3 weeks.. BOO

Great invention!
I've never seen anything like this before. I got a great deal on insulation at Home Depot, so I insulated my garage. Too bad rafters were 24" oc instead of 16!! I used this tool to rip rolls of insulation lengthwise, actually cut rolls right in half before unrolling. Did a 950sqft garage with it...worked great. Recently I replaced a king latex foam mattress that was 10 yrs old. I didn't want to lose that great latex pad, so I used this blade to cut through the latex. Worked great! I have no idea what I would have used if I hadn't had this! I never sharpened, haven't felt the need. Maybe if it did it would work even better...

Didn't find it worth the money
Maybe I wasn't using it correctly. Used it on R25/R30 unfaced batts on Commercial Construction project. Had to sharpen it every 5-6 cuts, and the effort to make cuts was much greater than a $30 knife should make it.I found that a 25mm snap off blade utility knife worked much better and was only $5.
