Sicily: Three Thousand Years of Human History

This author makes the somewhat daunting 3,000 years of Sicilian history (and almost countless rulers from so many places) understandable and interesting in a fairly fast moving narrative. Indeed, I found it a page-turner! Occasionally, I found myself wishing for a bit more academic content, but I think the author was wise in choosing how much detail to include in order to cover such a huge historical record. There seem to be few books in English on Sicilian history, so we owe this author thanks.

"Sicily" è un ottimo libro che consiglio a tutti. Ha molti pregi. In particolare è chiaro e ben informato, organico e coinvolgente. Soprattutto ha il pregio che si fa leggere agevolmente e con piacere, anche dal lettore che ha scarsa dimestichezza con l'inglese.

Sehr umfangreich, flüssig zu lesen, mit guten Übersichtskarten versehen.Das gut gegliederte Werk führt den Leser durch die verschiedenen Epochen der großen Insel.Erobert, kolonisiert, ausgebeutet und unterdrückt. hat sich ein inneres Misstrauen zum Staat entwickelt.Eine vermeintlich reiche Insel die von ihren feudalen Strukturen arm regiert wurde.Soziale Zustände die eine Abneigung gegenüber Neuerungen und Reformen von Außen verhinderten.Die perspektivlose Armut als Nährboden der Maffia.
