Jean Fritz pulls you into the life of her characters- the dialogue, the subtle description and very real human emotions. I bought this to read aloud to my kids because I remember reading it as a child. History writing at its best.

Excellent, my daughter love it!

My 3rd grader has this as required reading with our homeschool curriculum and I've really enjoyed reading this one (even if he hasn't yet). I'm hoping as the book progresses he begins to love it. It's at the top of his reading level but he's able to comprehend the story and narrate it back to me. I highly recommend for anyone who is looking for Early American history book for their 3rd or 4th grader.

Really enjoyed this book. Got it from the library and read it to all of my children ages 7 down to infant as part of our read alouds. It was a hit with everyone so I had to buy it for our home library.

This is an excellent book, especially for those who live in Western Pennsylvania since it is about a family in the late 1700s who move west of the Laurel Mountains in PA.
