Insightful guide to many of India's prime forest areas
It is a rare talent that can join scientific rigour with a light, flowing and easily readable text, but Dr Johnsingh manages it in this insightful book. Based on a collection of published articles, India's foremost conservation biologist has added postscript to many of the chapters where he has revisited an area.Johnsingh's decades studying the forests of India (and beyond, he also looks at Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar) show clearly in the writing, but there are also touches of humility and that most crucial facet of being a scientist: an ability to learn at any stage in your career."It dawned on me that though Dampa did not house many tigers and large ungulates, it produced excellent, clean water for the people living around the reserve." This kind of striving for connections and giving thought to the many processes at work in the forests characterises a fantastic book.It only lacks another update to see what he makes of India's forests and wildlife ten years on...
