Spoilers/Discussions (Sort of) on Problematic Story Lines
While I usually enjoy Roberts books very much, I had a problem with details & common sense in this one.If you move into your dead (but very famous) grandmother's home (who was a huge film star) and was renovating the home, wouldn't security be the very first thing you'd install? No alarm system, ZERO cameras. Nothing. That shocked me. Yeah, yeah, she "forgot to put a lock" on the barn door where all of her grandmothers things were. Lol I mean, wow. Seriously? Why isn't security for the property a #1 priority?None of this made any sense at all. There's a point in the book where someone says that even with a padlock on the barn door, it wouldn't stop someone from getting in. Um, yes it would because it'd take time to try & break a padlock. While you were moving around breaking said lock, the motion detectors (that you should have installed) flood the yard with light & sound when triggered, while the cameras catch the intruder on film & the alarm inside the house that wakes up the homes occupants.None of the books characters even come close to discussing this.If you have all kinds of people from town coming over to work on the house of a beloved, famous actress (regardless if you think you trust them or not), you have to have security. Cilla does not. What annoyed me the most was security never even crossed her mind. Her grandmother, Janet Hardy, was a major film star & celebrity...her granddaughter couldn't be bothered to lock up properly or install security cameras. She then has some loser threaten her and never even considers security afterwards. Neither does her neighbor (the love interest) her father, stepmother, contracted workers or anyone else. A number of incidents of vandalism occur that cameras could have captured, but no....LolWhen someone nearly kills her friend/ex-husband and messes up her barn (vandalism as well) she still doesn't install cameras or a proper security system. She has a pity party instead. They could have easily gotten film had they had cameras. All cases solved!Having good security is normal & at the top of everyone's list. Why isn't it a priority in this book? This was the home of a celebrity & there was absolutely nothing. Why didn't Roberts give her characters intelligence and common sense?Cilla is not written as a stupid character per se but she kind of turned out that way. A bit of a whiner as well. "Woe is me" was her mantra. You're halfway through the book before the police suggest a security system for the house (after numerous problems). Cilla acts like a complete moron never thinking of it herself. Ridiculous. This was ok for passing time but that was about it.When readers are smarter than characters in a book it's not enjoyable.

Couldn't stop!
It is a story that grabbed me from start to finish. Didn't want to put it down to sleep last night. Glad I waited, the story deserves being awake for.

Excellent Romantic Suspense
Cilla McGowan has spent her life living in the shadow of her famous movie star grandmother, Janet Hardy. The legendary actress had purchased a small farm in Virginia where she would go to unwind, but it was also the site of glittering parties and the place where she died of an overdose. Now Cilla, herself a former child star, has decided to settle in one place and start her own contracting business flipping houses. The place she has chosen is Janet Hardy's Little Farm, which is in dire need of a rehab. She camps in one of the bedrooms and begins the process of remodeling the once graceful old house. Across the street, in a restored Victorian, is Cilla's sexy neighbor, graphic novelist Ford Sawyer. Ford introduces himself to Cilla when he asks for permission to use her image for a new superhero. Cilla is at first put off, and then intrigued by the idea, and also by Ford himself, and his little dog Spock. Also intriguing is the hidden cache of old letters Cilla finds in the attic that were written to Janet by an unnamed lover. At first, the letters were full of ardor, which then cooled and turned to anger and disgust. The last one alludes to Janet being pregnant, which is a revelation, as no one had known she was pregnant when she died, presumably by her own hand. It leaves Cilla to wonder if perhaps Janet's death was helped along by her lover, a theory bolstered somewhat by Cilla's vivid dreams about Janet in the past. After she carelessly discusses her theories with Ford where any number of workmen could have overheard, Cilla and her home are plagued by vandalism, and her ex-husband, who is a dear friend, is viciously attacked one night in her barn. She has a suspect, a bitter old man whose son was paralyzed in the same accident that took the life of Cilla's uncle Johnny, Janet's son, a few months before Janet's death. Not quite everything fits so neatly with that theory, however, and until Cilla and Ford can figure out who Janet's mystery lover was, anyone and anything close to Cilla isn't safe, most especially Cilla herself.Nora Roberts is a talented author who can write entertaining books of many types, and this time out she has chosen to weave a rich tapestry of a story with an emphasis on home and family, with intrigue driving the story. Cilla's relationship with Ford, while crackling with sexual electricity, is comfortable and relaxed, and their friends and various family members are an integral part of their lives. Delivering a story both gripping and cozy, Nora Roberts easily retains her place at the top in women's fiction.

mostly good
Good plot, mediocre ending and too much filler. I’m a huge fan of NR and reread most of her books, this is not one of those. IMO it just lacked in too many ways to be considered great.

Nora Roberts is one of the best authors ever.
I like the way all her books end.

Absolutely loved it!!!
I just finished this book, and I absolutely loved it. Nora Roberts writes exceptionally well. I don't usually read what is considered romance novels. I like hers because they have depth.1. Most characters are artistic. (I was an actor and a singer so I relate to their artistic natures.) This novel is no exception.2. I have read about 8 of her novels and each one that I have read involves complex family relationships. This novel is no exception.3. The men in the novels are wonderful. They are the kind of men that most women wish they could find. And I do not mean just the physical attributes. This novel is no exception. And in this case, Ford is tall and gangly and a nerd. It is his character that makes him attractive.4. And, finally, this novel contains a dog! Spock. A wonderful, wonderful dog and he does not get hurt!!! (You have to be careful with Stephen king because he will sometimes hurt the dog character and sometimes kill it! So I screen his books with dogs before I read them.)Highly recommend to anyone who wants to read a well written book, with a good story, with characters you care about, with a wonderful dog character.

What could be better than discovering a Nora Roberts book that you somehow missed when it was released? She is the most successful writer of romance for a reason - for me the most important reason is that her characters behave in a believable way. With Nora you don't get a hero and heroine who behave as though they despise one another until the last page where they suddenly declare their undying love. I liked the main characters in this novel - Cilla the admittedly unlikely builder and Ford the ever patient, reasonable and rational graphic novelist. The restoration of the house was interesting and the mystery was compelling. Most importantly, the romance was sweet and believable.
