Is it necessary to have an led dedicated lux meter in order to obtain accurate readings of led lighting systems?

The technical answer to your question is yes.  LED light is very different from incandescent light. The Illumination Engineering society has NOT changed the way they measure light in 50-6- years, they are working on it.   We always use a regular light meter only because there is no other real way without spending a fortune.  There are technically many things to consider and they way we precieve light is very different with LEDs. What we look to many times is the manufacturer's info on lumens the fixture produces. The meter's specifications are designed around incandescent light measurements with a filter for white LED lighting.  You can measure other sources, but the results would only be useful comparing bulbs of a similar type.
