Q: Does it measure ammonia , & other chemicals

Hi, Dean!Thanks for reaching out. We know how sometimes those terms and water chemistry can be confusing. So what does a TDS meter detect?The term TDS, total dissolved solids, is slightly misleading. Not everything that is dissolved in water will be detected by a TDS meter. Only ions that have a charge can be measured with this technology. Pesticides and organic pollutants cannot be detected by a TDS meter. About AMMONIA - Science alert!The TDS meter will detect the ammonium in the water, but it is not possible to use TDS in place of a real ammonia test kit.Ammonia exists in two forms at the same time. Ammonia is NH3 and has no charge. Ammonium is NH4+ and has a charge. In water both forms of "ammonia" are present. Test strips measure both forms and report the level as a sum of both. Some kits call it Total Ammonia and some just call it ammonia. The test kits cannot distinguish between the two-the kits just total it up. I can explain how they do that but not in this message :)In acidic water nearly all of the "ammonia" is in the ammonium form. As the pH rises, some of the ammonium shifts to ammonia. There is a ratio of ammonia to ammonium, depending on the pH of the water. If you have an aquarium, you should be using an ammonia test kit made for aquariums.Hope this helps! Q: Can this test the salinity in soups

No. I assume you are interested in testing sodium levels? You can calculate that by the sodium level on the label. TDS is not the same as sodium analysis.
