Lonely on the Mountain: The Sacketts: A Novel

ORRIN SACKETT
Logon Sackett a cousin of Tell and Orrin has sent a letter that he needs help. If they don't come with the cattle, he may be hung..that's all he wrote, but one of the words "Higginess" was a word they used when trouble is a brewing.A really fast moving action action packed adventure of these Mountain Sacketts. Lots of wisdom these men carried. Tell has fought in the war of the state's and he fought for the Union. He was around sixteen years old, fighting with the sixth Calvary. He never went back home, but decided he wanted to see the West. Tell and Ty are delivering the cattle from the United States to British Columbia where there were miners who were very low on provisions. A gang of claim jumpers had taken over the mining area, hoping to starve the miners into leaving and then this gang could file on their claims as abandoned. These men hid and followed Tell, Ty and Lon who was their Chinese cook, Cap, Brandy, the rest were cowpunchers earning a few dollars. This is a great reading of adventure with lots of historical information. Beautiful descriptions of their surroundings and so elegantly described by Tell, even though he continues to say he doesn't have that much education, it doesn't stop him from living and enjoying his surroundings.William Tell Sackett reminds me of Gary Cooper, tall, lean hip and wide shoulders; you'll know how Gary Cooper never got excited always calm, but deadly...just a thought if Gary was still alive, would like to see this movie.

When I was eleven and took the rifle down from its perch where my Daddy always hung it
And went hunting in search of something to shoot I was a Sackett before I knew what a Sackett was. This is a good read but not being familiar with the land sometimes it gets a little hard to work out where everyone on the mountain is at any given time. I like some of his other books more because of the local not the characters which I love. I never met a bad Sackett although Nolan might be part bad. I can't say that for Logan because he was the first Sackett I met in Ride the Dark Trail.

Louis L'Amour's book is a very good book to read
As usual, Louis L'Amour's book is a very good book to read. He knows how to hold the readers attention, how to make you wonder just what is going to happen next! It is the kind of book you just want to keep reading until you get to the end and then wish it would keep going. This is the kind of book I wish would never end!

Heading into a fight but going anyway because a Sackett needs help.
I have loved the Sacketts since I saw the made-for-TV movie in the 80s. We bought every Sackett book we could at used book stores. Now I have become an eBook reader because it is so much easier on my arthritis, I am gradually replacing all of my beloved paperbacks and hardbacks with eBooks so I will still be able to read them. Any Sackett book will be filled with adventure, excitement, danger, and most certainly, love. One of the Sackett brothers or cousins is always running into an unexpected woman who knocks him for a loop. That just adds spice to the danger. In Lonely on The Mountain the three Sackett brothers; Tell, Orin, and Tyrel, have to come up with a herd of cattle to deliver before winter set in in the high mountain gold mining country. Their cousin Login gave his word and took the money to buy the cattle, but now he is missing. Before he went missing he wrote a letter to Tell in Abilene, Kansas. Tell, Cap Roundtree, and Tyrel had just arrived in Abilene from a cattle drive and had sold their herd. Everyone was looking forward to clearing off some debts left over from a very dry summer. While eating at the Drover's Cottage the postal clerk came up to Tell and told him he had an important message for him that had come two days earlier. Tyrel offered to read the letter. Logan had promised to provide several hundred head of cattle to some starving miners and their families before winter set in; but, the money was gone the cattle were gone, he was being held captive, and he was facing a hanging. He needed their help. P.S. You can expect Higginses. That was Sackett code for real trouble!

Lonely On The Mountain
My husband was thrilled with this. He owned all but two of this author's books and this was one of the two he needed.

the easy way ain’t so easy
As the “rule” goes, “If a Sackett needs help ask a relative. He did and did and they did. Well there was a claim and claim jumpers and a cattle drive and efforts to stop it. And then there were Sacketts. A good tail.

Sackett 19
Several of the Sackett gang appears in this story - William Tell, and both his brothers, Orrin and Tyrell, ride out to rescue cousin Logan locked up in a British Columbian jail. The POV changes between characters a few times, but we readers mostly ride with William Tell. The POV changes should've helped break the monotony except all the characters are doing the same thing - riding a lonely trail through the grasslands spreading out at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, each character looking for the others because of stuff that keeps separating them (no spoilers).Despite all that, three-quarters of the book kept me involved. The book was headed for four-stars but L'Amour rushed right through the ending, failing to deliver the promised showdown. This book might fall into the final position of The Sackett's chronological order, but it wasn't last book published. Lonely on the Mountain was published in 1980, as was The Warrior's Path, with Ride the River published in 1983 and Jubal Sackett in 1985. I think L'Amour expected to return to Logan and Tell, as the ending of this book sets up the start of another town, but L'Amour may have passed away before he could do so. I know the L'Amour family promised to continue publishing his unpublished manuscripts but those haven't appeared on the market (where's a ghost-writer when ya need one?).[GRRM could take a lesson here - ol' man, hurry up and finish your series before you die so you don't leave readers hanging like L'Amour did.]But there's the Talon and Chantry novels to look forward to; I'm hoping the spin-off series (finished by 1981) will minimize the gap that's left by the abrupt ending of this series.
