What It Should Be
The Yogurtia is what every yogurt maker should be. It has temperature & time control. So often, yogurt makers are set permanently at one temperature with the ability to change only the time fermenting. I don't understand why more makers can't include temperature control. Well, here is the yogurt maker you want. You can set the time anywhere from 1-48 hours, and the temperature anywhere between 25-65 degrees celsius (77-149 fahrenheit). You can use it to keep things at room temp to ferment (caspian sea yogurt) or go higher up to ferment things that require a hotter environment than regular yogurt. I specifically splurged for this machine because I wanted something to make natto (45 celsius). Electric blankets never gave me a consistent result. Made my first batch of natto and came out perfect. The machine comes with two plastic yogurt/food containers with their own lids. Each hold about one liter. You also get a mixing spoon. The Yogurtia is made for sale in Japan. For non-Japanese speakers, this machine is simple to operate. There are just two buttons with Japanese on it. The button on the left (looking at the machine) is the "start/stop" button. The button on the right is the "timer/temperature" button. The Yogurtia plug should work in American outlets like any two prong device, but you can seek out an adapter if you want to be extra safe. I've been plugging it directly into the wall with no problem, though I do unplug while not in use. To operate, first plug in the device. You will automatically see the current number setting for either the temp or time. Use the up/down buttons to adjust. Press the timer/temp button to change the display number to whatever the other setting is, and use the up/down buttons to adjust again. You can keep pressing the timer/temp button to keep going back and forth between settings as many times as you want. If you're unsure whether you're on the timer or temp setting, just keep pressing the up/down button to see how far it goes. If you can get the number between 1-24, you're on the timer setting. If you can get the number 49-65, you're on the temperature setting. Remember the temperature works in celsius degrees. Once set to your liking, press the start/stop button and you will see a small red light go on underneath where the start/stop button is. It will turn itself off (light goes off) once done, or you can press stop yourself. You can't change settings after you press start - you have to stop first, then redo settings and press start again. Settings are remembered as whatever it was the last time you used it.The maker makes sterilizing really easy. The parts included with each liter tub are: the tub body (clear), an inner lid with a small cutout for the mixing spoon handle (clear), an outer screw-on lid with handle (white or blue for the blue Yogurtia). To sterilize, place the mixing spoon in the tub with 50 cc water (a little less than 1/4 cup) and place the inner clear lid on with the spoon inside and handle sticking through the inner lid hole. Microwave at 500-600 wattage for 1 min 30 seconds. Dump out the water and your container & spoon should be sterile enough for use. I don't bother adjusting the power level on my microwave (somewhere around 1000 wattage) and the plastic tub/lid/spoon still comes out fine. Of course you can sterilize the old fashioned way if you like. You don't have to heat the milk prior to making yogurt in this machine. It's simply dump in the starter, mix with a little milk to get things smooth, mix with the rest of the milk, put on the inner lid, screw on the outer lid with handle, place in the machine, put on machine cover, adjust settings and start (for yogurt, try 40 celsius at 7-8 hours). Just lift out the whole container and stick it directly into the refrigerator to cool. If you're fermenting things that need oxygen (such as natto), just leave the inner lid off, screw on the outer lid with handle, and leave the machine cover slightly askew so air can trickle in and out. You should also put a paper towel or thin kitchen towel under the machine cover so it can catch condensation that will form under the machine cover when making natto.Paying the markup for an import product stings a little, but I am infinitely happier with the Yogurtia which lets me ferment a wider range of things than the yogurt makers that are one job only.

Miso, Natto, Yogurt, Amazake...
I love this product!!!!!!!It is very expensive to buy Japanese food product in the US.I am lucky enough to be able to buy Koji at my local store so I have been making my own Miso with this machine :)!If you like white, light, sweet miso, this will be great. I double the salt content for my recipe, and works great! Also, this is great for raising bread dough at certain temp. (not suitable for big portion since this is quite small)-1 star because instructions and buttons on the machine is in Japanese so it will be difficult for those who don't read Japanese. Also, it does NOT beep when it's finished so I sometimes forget that this is on!You will need adopter for this to work in the U.S.

Doesn't work at all.
Mine must be defective. It won't hold a consistent temperature at all. I use a digital probe thermometer to double check it and the thing is all over the place. I have to constantly adjust the temp up and down to try and get it to stay at 40°C. Completely defeats the purpose of why I bought it.

I was so glad that I found in amazon
TANICA Yorgrutia is well known as no one fail to make delicious homemade yogurt in Japan. I was so glad that I found in amazon. Since I got this yogurt maker, I made 4 times of 1 1/4 qt (one container capacity) already:) I can’t go back to store bought yogurt anymore. It’s not only you can save money but the most importantly it’s delicious!!It’s very easy to use it. It came with full colored recipe book but it’s all written in Japanese. All the homemade recipe even TANICA Yogurtia said “Do not use “Ultra Pestered” or “pestered” milk and I wanted to use an organic whole milk but I couldn’t find the milk that is not “Ultra Pestered” or “pestered”. I finally decided use my favorite brand “simple truth organic whole milk Ultra-pestered anyway. Surprisingly, I succeeded to make delicious yogurt. I also tried with 2% fat organic milk but the result was little runny. So far whole milk makes the best result.I translated one of the basic plain yogurt recipe from TANICA recipe book.
