How does the cinch open? I just received it and find it very cumbersome and laborious.

Don't try to force it open like a regular cinch bag. Rather, pull the plastic tab straight back away from the frame. There is a good video on YouTube by Pack Hacker Reviews that shows all the details and functions, must-watch if you are having issues.
