Don't Bother, Save Your Money!
A major disappointment, both books read like one of those "women in peril films" that you find on UK freeview channels during the mid afternoon TV schedule. After reading " Die Again (in the Rizzoli and Isle series), it is hard to believe that this is by the same Author. In Call after Midnight, the characters were in Europe (London, Netherlands and Germany) and the stereotypical comments about pea-souper fog in London almost made me throw up. When since has anyone in London experience fog, let alone dense fog that is really that bad? All we needed was the Ripper to step out of the shadows. The mention of the Windmills in Amsterdam was equally nauseating. And as for the female characters, they were weak and insipid who appeared not to be able cope alone, and needed the assistance of some "square jawed" male to save them; they were like characters from old Mills & Boon novels (apparently Gerritsen was a fan of them and it seems to have had a lasting effect on her). I couldn't wait to finish them and I'll be leaving the book at a free drop-off point at my local book exchange.
