Immerse Yourself in German
I took German in college decades ago, and it never stuck with me as French did. As I like to joke, I thought I had a facility with language (because French came so easily)... and that illusion was shattered when I took German! So it was fun to revisit in this book. This publisher intends this book to be used for extensive learning, which mimics the way we naturally pick up language as children by simply listening and reading without being too formal. No intensive breakdowns of conjugations and sentence structure. Rather, in extensive learning, you try to pick up vocabulary and grammar by the context... and you do so with a lot of reading and listening. The brief conversations in this book are ones like someone would have with friends and family, not geared for travelers like many books on conversational foreign languages are. Each German conversation is immediately followed by a few comprehension questions in German; the final section is the full English translation of the conversation. I wish this series had vocabulary lists—the publisher tells me this is planned for the next edition—as I think that vocabulary lists in books like this get you mentally prepared to read the conversation. If glanced at before reading the conversation, the words can provide mental hooks that can help you better understand the conversation. Vocabulary lists don't have to be memorized to be of use. If you are studying German and are at a late beginner or early intermediate level, this book would most likely help your learning.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

NOT GREAT
A storage way to learn German, very akin to how Schliemann said he learned English by translating the Vicar of Wakefield! It's all in German with no translations. Some folk may like that, I don't.
