All Things Considered: Revised Edition (The Princeton Language Program: Modern Chinese) Revised Edition

Nice book! The topics are relevant and interesting. I've used several other Chinese textbooks and I like the formatting of this book, which tests your understanding of the content after each chapter. The grammar points are not explained, which isn't really the job of a textbook. Rather, the grammar points are practiced using examples. Although this is a higher-level textbook, it would still be nice to have English translations of the text, so that would be a criticism. My only other criticism is that there seems to be no method of getting the audio with the book. I knew that going in, but having that option would be nice.The seller shipped this book timely and arrived in excellent condition. No complaints there!

Helped me learn Chinese very quickly

Needed for school

I've had many Chinese language course over my undergraduate career, and I am a Chinese Studies major. If I took the HSK right now I'd probably pass a 3 well, and if I studied well for a few months a 4. This book was purchased for a 3200 level.So this is probably my favorite textbook any of my classes used. They used words that people use in real life, of course there are some discrepancies, but less so than the other brand of books I was used to using.The layout is 1st: conversation. 2nd: vocab. 3rd: explanation of new grammar.One of the reasons I really like this is that they explained the grammar well. They don't give an English transcript of the conversation, but then by this level they shouldn't have to.

Honestly the best Chinese textbook I've used. Extremely modern, relevant, with great vocabulary coverage and grammar patterns. This is THE definitive text if you want to make the jump from intermediate to advanced. I went from not being able to read a newspaper to reading them comfortably after 2 months of intensive study with this book.

Great book! I bought it for a Chinese class. The language can be rather formal, but if you're seeking to improve your reading abilities, I highly recommend this book. Topics mainly comprise social issues, spanning from issues such as the environment, birth control, law, and government. There are grammar explanations and nice vocabulary lists, but if you are an independent learner, some of the explanations may not be sufficient. Since I am taking a class, I can ask my teacher any questions I have.Visual aids and pictures are also lacking. Overall, I feel like the material is for more advanced learners.

Poor grammar explanations, lousy vocabulary lists, boring politically-charged topics with very heavy biases in each discussion. Overall the worst textbook I have ever used. I could not recommend this book any less. If you're looking for an intermediate book to self-study to, or if you're a teacher looking for a book for your class, PLEASE look elsewhere as this book is not interesting to read. The topics are all at least somewhat politically charged and I could sense that my teacher didn't enjoy using this book either. Especially the last chapter. Whoever wrote this book is probably an awful person in real life. If you've read the last chapter, then you know what I mean. As the author says, "improvement comes at a cost". Unfortunately that cost for him/her is a one star review. I wish it could be more burdensome than that though.
