It's gives off a substantial amount of light. It would have been great if it had the slow strobe light In case I ever had to use it a a distress beacon. Charging it with the USB gives it a few hours of light. Cranking it gives it a fair amount of light usage as well. I haven't done a thorough test on a full USB charge but I wouldn't worry about charging it via USB since it has a crank. I was going to order the solar version but I think the crank style would be more convenient. If you order the solar version, order one of these as a back-up in case you're not able to charge the solar one. That was my plan. The outer shell feels pretty good. The accordion style collapsible part is pretty good but Im not sure how long that would last. Keep in mind this is more or an emergency or camping light so don't expect the center part to last if you open it and close is all day. It's a good size as well. its about the size of three cork coasters or one triple decker moon pie. :D Opened up its about the size of a beer can. I would definitely recommend this for emergencies instead of candles. What I've been doing the past couple days is fully charging it up then letting it drain. My understanding is you have to condition the batteries this way to make them last. Not sure if this still applies to Li-ion batteries but it use to apply to Ni-Cd. I may order another one in the near future. Different brands make different colors and different prices. So shop around and look for the best deal.

Ready for the next power outage; wish we had kids already to power the crank
We've just received ours and haven't been able to test it in various settings, but so far so good. The device is quite well built, with the dynamo crank in particular feeling robust. The one thing that does not seem very robust is the plastic accordion type covering for the lantern section; we'll see how long it lasts, but for $12 US I can't complain too much. The light has two levels, both of which are quite bright, and when it lantern mode (when you pull the two circular halves apart and expand the accordion bit, the flashlight "dims" and the lantern brightens - a nice design touch. Covers for the charging ports seem robust but I wouldn't trust it in the pool. Overall, a great buy for $12. We'll be ready the next time there's a power outage!

The best thing is
I've used other similar handcrank LED camping lights, and this one is my top choice. It's rugged, has never failed in multiple power outages, the light lasts more than 5 hours (on the low setting, after full charge -- longer than 5 hours, it's about as bright as a dim nightlight). I've given several to relatives in the boonies, they keep it handy when the lights go out. Also used as a dependable flashlight. The best thing is, the USB connectors are straight forward: a (female) micro USB for charging (rarely used, the handcrank is fun for the kids); and a (female) full-size USB for reverse charging. Other models I've use required adapters to convert male/female and micro/full-size. This one doesn't.

Good charger lantern
This lantern works well. Its not the highest powered lamp ever, but the usb in out ports make this worthwile as a charger. The lantern is just kinda a survival bonus. This woul b a great off grid lantern but it also powers usb device on grids of sorts. Not sure what the capacity of it may b but its not meant to b a high amp appliance.

Great if you're camping away from any power source
I've got a camping trip to Tanzania coming up soon, and will be away from any source of power for over a week. This is testing perfect for my needs so far. Just a few minutes cranking gives over an hour of light, and I've already verified that I can charge my Samsung smart phone from it.

I purchased this to be part of a bug-out-bag that I am putting together. First off I like how when it is compacted it acts like a flashlight. Then when it is extended it acts a mini lantern. The handle to hang is very convenient. The wind up handle tucks in nicely in the base.I liked how it already came charged. A plastic is missing from the base but not a major issue for me.The low and high settings for the light does provide good illumination I tested it in one of the rooms in the apartment, ensuring that the room was dark and when I turned this is on as a lantern it lit up the room fairly well and on high setting it lit the room even more.I certainly would recommend this for emergencies or even camping

Great lantern, but missing a rubber foot already.
I'm very impressed with this lantern with one exception. Either it shipped missing one of the three rubber feet or they fit so loosely it fell out. Not something I remember inspecting on opening the package. Other than that it makes a great light for walking the dog at night. Recharging by USB is very convenient and the hand crank backup is a great backup.

all in all... i think its a pretty cool product.
i was a little skeptical about buying this, but opening it up and testing it for about 30 min i was not displeased. very bright light to have in an emergency. i LOVE the fact it doesnt take batteries. i DID NOT test the ability to charge phones or other electronic devices simply because it isnt important to me to sit there and crank and crank and crank to charge my phone. if it ever comes down to that and i need to charge it im sure itll give me enough battery to make a few calls.all in all, i think its a pretty cool product.
