Does this grill make the surface under it burn?

It does get Very Hot underneath. I let it get as hot as it could (500 - 625°) for the first break-in heat & then I cooked on it. I felt underneath & if i had left it on top of the plastic tarp covering my table, i feel it would have started to melt it. I would not use this grill on a plastic table. I put 2 large ceramic floor tiles underneath & it was fine. It would make a good spot to keep your cooked food warm, wrapped in foil.

Two questions, first, is the body of the grill casted or stamped sheet metal and second are the racks stainless steel or plated steel?

The body is solid. I'm thinking it's cast iron. This is heavier than it looks. As far as the rack, it's probably plated but it's hard to tell. This thing is built like a tank. If you are looking for a no frills, solid, small grill that should last for a long time, go with this.

Is the regulator supposed to sit loose in the tube after the swist and lock? Mine does.
