Perfect smallish globe
I bought mine in 1994 and have loved it ever since. Of course, when you buy one today, you get current country boundaries; Replogle updates those as needed.I had mine on the fireplace mantel for years, but now I keep it on my desk. 9" is a great size for both places. Small enough that it isn't in the way as a 12" would be, but large enough to easily read all the words, which isn't really true of the tiny 6" models. Smaller than about 9" is really more of a decoration than a useful globe in my view, while larger than 9" starts to command a lot of space. From the moment I first saw it, I have loved the antique look. Some prefer the traditional blue ocean look. I think this is easier on the eyes and very attractive. I don't need a globe to remind me that oceans are blue, and anyway in either case the countries aren't the colors depicted, so this isn't really about rigorous realism. Why not choose the prettier one, I say.Not sure why some are saying the semicircular support is plastic. Mine is definitely metal, along with the sort of bell-shaped base. I recently bought a new one for my son, and although there are some very minor differences, his is definitely metal too. The only plastic is the little pin at the south pole holding the globe onto the support, and the little disk at the top that allows you to quickly determine the time of day anywhere in the world (you spin the disk until it points to your current time for your location, then look to see what time the disk indicates for whatever other part of the world). Plastic is fine for both of those minor pieces. The hardwood base is simple and looks nice. It has not suffered at all in the last 29 years. All it needs is an occasional dusting. As your globe ages and becomes outdated in terms of country boundaries and names, Replogle allows you to buy replacement globes for your unit if desired. They recently quoted me $20 for the globe plus $19.88 shipping.I highly recommend this globe.

If you are looking for a globe - this is the one!
I bought this for a gift and was very pleased, as was the recipient! I did quite a bit of research when trying to find an affordable, quality, attractive globe. After all that searching - and even ordering another one and returning it (due to low quality) - I am confident that this globe is one of your best options. It is a fair price, and the construction is good. The globe has raised topographical markings, and the colors are great. A classy look, just as pictured!I highly recommend this product!

Nice little globe
Nice little globe. It is advertised as die cast so I expected the arch to be metal but it is plastic so kind of cheep if you look at it up close. The underside of the wood base is unfinished, very ruff and uneven with patches of glue. For what it cost I would have expected better quality. More cheep Chinese stuff being sold at more expensive prices.

Nice size and color
I wanted a new globe that would easily fit on a book shelf. This one is a bit smaller than a standard student globe, so it fits perfectly. The wood base and antique appearance are attractive. My only complaint is that the gold parts that hold the globe are made of plastic, not metal, so it might not hold up under rough use.

Poorly made, badly damaged due to flimsy shipping box.
Shipping box was flimsy, and it arrived damaged. Globe was crushed inside. Very poor quality packaging and globe was cheaply made. Not worth the price, so I sent it back.

Really nice globe - the surface is distinct and it has ...
Really nice globe - the surface is distinct and it has the early 20th century look we like BUT the political borders are accurate for 2014. The semi-circle arm is plastic, which makes it feel a bit cheap - but it looks very nice and the price was right.

Satisfied with the Purchase
The globe more than met my expectations. It's a beautiful and wonderfully detailed globe. Despite what other reviews have said, the arm is metal and not plastic. Also, despite one complaint I read here, the globe I received is up-to-date and has South Sudan. It is well put together with almost no flaws that I can see in the seams. The raised relief is also well done. Overall a well put together, quality globe for a great price.
