Fashion Portfolio: Design and Presentation

MUST HAVE for lllustrators and character/costume designers!
Heads up this is an essay review because of how excited I am about this book. But I saved the essay for the end.TLDR: go watch the video someone posted here, they said flipped through the whole book.IF YOU’RE AN ILLUSTRATOR, VISUAL ARTIST, CHARACTER/COSTUME DESIGNER: Absolutely amazing for fashion illustrators and illustrators in general, as well as character designers, looking for experimental, avant- garde, architectural, high fashion, hardware filled, not your average fashion illustration book.It features modern illustration styles. It features a lot of Asian illustrators unlike I’ve seen in other fashion illustration books, which I love.IF YOU’RE AN ACTUAL FASHION DESIGNER:Now for actual fashion designer looking into this book, I would say this book is more for inspiring those who focus on modern high fashion runway ready to wear pieces. Designers who are looking to set the trend and bring fashion innovation whether it’s realistically functional to wear day to day or not. You know, the street style mixed, avant-garde, architectural, 3D printed, think Iris Van Herpen, Vogue’s features runway ready to wear photo albums. This book is more like an inspiration book of stylizing and spicing up your fashion illustration portfolio and your high fashion design routine rather than being an actual construction or step by step guide to developing your folder portfolio to show your clients. I wouldn’t say it’s for designers looking for mainstream department store easy to wear sportswear and gowns. Again, even as an illustrator, I would probably be disappointed if I am a fashion designer if I bought this book expecting examples of refined presentable fashion design folder portfolio or construction varieties. It’s more of a scrapbook of innovative ideas so you can stop being basic ;)CONTINUED RANT FROM AN EXCITED ILLUSTRATOR FOR AMUSED AND BORED PEOPLE:I’m an illustrator with heavy fashion illustration influence with a surreal flair. I’m all about avant grade and surprising construction. I have been collecting fashion illustration books but every time am disappointed at how basic and mainstream and sportswear they are. Their showcase of rendering styles were nothing refreshing, just the usual flat felt tip liner, marker or watercolor base, and details with color pencil, highlights in chalk pastel or white gouache and tempera. As much as I appreciate the basics, I like to color my work digitally and experiment with textures, and I was itching for a book that at least showcased Laura Laine’s level of creative rendering and stylization.I wanted to see curated renderings and reference ready edited photographs of avant garde and sculptural/architectural elements like Iris van Harpen, hardware creativity with Victorian, steampunk, post apocalyptic, military details that would help me with buckles, chains, corsets, harnesses,m…innovative silhouettes and combinations that would help exploring street style and modern ready to wear runway pieces…but I’ve had to settle for my pinterest board, still having trouble finding uniquely rendered modern fashion illustrations beyond the norm and the brush and ink liner minimalism.Never did I expect to find what I’ve been looking for in fashion illustration book in a book called Fashion Portfolio! This book is exactly what I wanted, tickles my creativity and their general graphic design and layout has me excited and engaged page to page!I found it by accident, this book was in my Amazon suggestions as I purchased Fashion Illustration and Design by Manuela Brambatti (this book is actually fantastic if you’re at intermediate figure drawing level diving into fabric renderings).I looked at the video review on a whim (a must see they posted the WHOLE BOOK flip through)… and was absolutely blown away at the aesthetics, had to get it! I didn’t even realize how much dedicated pages on illustration it had until I received it today and flipped through the book half way! Even the grayscale stylized photos of sculptural structures meant for actual designers is way more helpful for me to see the construction than my usual pinterest references. OK I’M GONNA GO FINISH LAST HALF OF THE BOOK! ANNA KIPER I LOVE YOU
