Awesome reel!
I’ve been a Penn loyalist for decades. I live in Bay Area so I’m a sturgeon slayer. Hali-Hunter, salmon and stripped bass. I own 4 320 git’s and they are still kickin strong. I decided to add one more reel, so I bought the Squall 2 50lw. I have to say I’m impressed. Solid build, smooth crank, loud bait runner clicker, plenty of drag 33lbs. Stout and looks sexy on an ugly stick tiger. So…, order up, quit couch surfin, quit wishin and go fishin…;) this reel comes in both right and left hand crank. There is no right or wrong way to crank. Whatever is comfortable. Spinners I like left crank. Bait caster right crank. Your option. 😃***Parents don’t frame photos of their kids playin video games - take them fishing!

Awesome reels~
Very nice reels. I have always been loyal to Penn fishing gear. I have International 30s and 50s for offshore fishing and 650 SS spinners for inshore and live bait fishing, but wanted to broaden my light tackle arsenal.I bought these to use for live bait kite fishing for sailfish, and am very happy with them. I was looking at Penn Spinfishers, Shimano Baitrunners, etc. but since I have little children, and often take inexperienced people fishing, I thought these conventional style reels would be better suited.I paired them with Penn Mariner II 6' Medium action rods..for me this is an ideal combination for bottom fishing, live bait fishing and even light tackle trolling.-the level wind is great for anglers who do not know how to manually level the line when retrieving, especially when kite fishing, where one has to constantly let out and retrieve line.-The conventional style reels are less prone to creating line twist...inexperienced anglers with a spinner will often keep cranking the reel even though the drag is pulling...this creates line twists...won't happen with a conventional reel. The level winder on these reels are very smooth and much better than they were in 'the old days'.- Free spool tension: These reels have a secondary drag for when the reel is in free spool (like a bait caster reel), this is invaluable for preventing backlashes/bird nests on the reel and a great feature for live bait fishing-Both the star drag and the free spool tensions have clicking detents...i.e. as you adjust them they have little clicks..this is really nice to have a tactile sense of how much you are adjusting the drags.-The reels are very light weight, and look beautiful!First trip out with them I fought a 76" sailfish, a 14# King Mackerel, and an 8 pound Atlantic Bonito...the reels performed perfectly.

HOW TO ...... BRAIDED LINE ON REELS = AK TOUGH
These are the best reels are not only great in quality but super easy on the budget! A good majority of the guide boats in Homer ak use these reels and by far are the most popular reel in Cook Inlet for halibut, Ling, and Salmon! I have the squall 30s for my halibut.LINE (I am using this setup for Trolling kings in homer ak and can be used for rock bass and such....lings too)This is how I spool Braided line on my reels.Braided line is EXPENSIVE! If you spool 300yds of braided line it will fill less than half of your reel up with line. You WANT that reel fuller to its top end in order to get the full reel and drag capabilities. On these reels one revolution of the reel handle is 3' of incoming line but if you only have half the spool filled, it will be much less than that. Fighting a fish or checking bait in 40' of water isn't that noticeable but 200' of water IS! so here is a trick to fill the reel up with only 250-300yds of expensive braided line and less than a $7 of backing material.Use a Blood knot to tie Dacron to spool base. MAKE SURE TO TAPE THE STRING DOWN! You don't want slippage!Start with 35yards of 80lb Dacron, moisten the string on the spool with a light oil to prevent corrosion on your reel, spool on another 45yds for a total of 80 yds of just Dacron.... (this is the stuff i used from amazon) http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010FQTHM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00Then use an Albright Knot (google it) to fasten your braided 65lb line to finish out your spool. I buy the 1500 yard spools........ 1500yds divided by 5 reels is 300yds of braid or 1500/6= 250yds......I do 300yds and get 5 reels out of it. The Dacron 80lb comes in 400 yards so 400yds/5reels= 80yds.... I can spool each rod brand new at $34 per reel...The kicker is I only have to respool the braided 300yd portion which saves a TON of money since you only have to go to the "backing" material. Plus even if you want to respool the Dacron backing it only costs less than $7 to replace.Braided line I usedhttp://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D3FR7E6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Will order again
Great reel! Another will be on the way soon. This is the reel a local fishing charter provides on all his combos. My husband enjoyed the reel so much he had to have one or two.

Good value and nice features for price.
Nice, medium-sized (20-25 pound mono) line counter reel. I like the design of the frame, which feels very solid for a graphite reel. The big bronze and stainless gears should help with longevity, and I like the mid-speed gear ratio - 4.9:1. Very comfortable handle that can be adjusted for speed or power. Reel cranks fairly smoothly considering the low bearing count. The eccentric lever on mine functions fine, but it is a little bit catchy - I'm hoping it smooths out a bit over time, minus one star. I use mine for near-shore bottom fishing and salmon, where the line counter often proves useful.Update: Easy to lose thrust washers inside the spool tension cap on right side of reel - ask me how I know. Just be aware if/when you remove the cap - be sure you see a bronze thrust washer in the cap at the location where the end of the spool shaft rests when the cap is installed. There's also a rubber washer under the bronze washer, but this one tends to stay in place a bit better.
