Inside Out: A Memoir

A well written and interesting biography
A well written biography from an actress who overcame a difficult childhood. Despite alcoholic parents, she worked hard to establish a successful career. And though I didn't expect it, she seems to be genuine, serious about marriage and motherhood. Although both of her marriages end when the men call it quits, you wonder why since she tries so hard to please them? Maybe they let her down just like her parents? Was it because she picked unavailable men? Or was she the unavailable one due to the chains around her heart from a painful childhood? At the end, she goes through a sad time when her children won't speak to her, and she finally comes to terms with the pain in her past.

Brave and eye opening!
I admire Demi so much for sharing her story - thorns and all. She’s an inspiration - not only as an actress, but as a human being. I wish her well.

Very honest/humble. Don’t listen to the haters.
I really have to disagree with the one star reviews that bashed the book and got a lot of helpful votes. Don’t listen to those crazies. I read a lot of memoirs and this one holds up with the better ones. I found her to be very honest which is all anyone could really ask for if they want to read about someone’s life. Even if being honest means she has to say negative or embarrassing things about herself and that’s a very brave thing for someone to do. As for someone saying she is getting her “revenge” out on people, calling them out on stuff…um no. I feel she was much nicer than she could have or should have been to everyone. As for Ashton and someone worrying about what his kids will read about him some day? Get a life. They’d find out about his past even without this book. It’s already out there and he brought it on himself. Like I said, she was still very kind. I’m sure he’s not a saint now either. As for her parents - whoa. They were both obvious sociopath/ narcissists. I mean, come on. You can’t even cover that up with whatever minor good quality that might come out in either of them at one moment in time. I still don’t think she quite gets that about them. You can’t make excuses for people like that or try to justify it. You shouldn’t. So overall, I think she was way too nice to everyone she wrote about, like I said.It took me over two years to buy/read the book because I listened to bad press/gossip and assumed it was going to be over the top juicy to where you don’t even know what you can believe to be true and then assumed I’d just be listening to a celebrity put themself on a pedestal, but it wasn’t like that at all! So I’m glad I finally read it. She was in a lot of great movies, I’m glad to know she’s actually a really humble person and glad to know Bruce is a great dad. (I was curious to know more about him too which is also why I read the book, but only learned basic things about him. I’m sure she felt a lot of stuff about him wasn’t her place to tell.) I felt the book kind of ended abruptly sometime in the early 2010’s even though it was written in 2019…I felt like I could have read several more chapters than it had… but I really hope Demi continues to find her way in life and continues to thrive and grow as a person. Whether she continues to act or not doesn’t matter. I just wish her the best in her real life journey.

Loved, loved loved her story.
Anyone who grew up with Demi Moore should read this. She shows her vulnerability but yet she’s empowered. Kudos to her for her bravery and honesty.

…truth shall set you Free
Demi was famous and had it all. But did she? I believe truth sets a person Free and just letting the truth win like it did with Demi…we all can be brave and simply speak our Truth!

It's mediocre
This book was not riveting, but it was interesting enough that I stayed with it. I witnessed all of her celebrity as we are exactly the same age, and I remember feeling sad and surprised when she and Bruce broke up and having many questions about the why ( and I still don't really know why, heard more in the tabloids about his carousing than she mentions). I also remember witnessing her struggle with her body image; between Striptease and G.I. Jane there wasn't much to wonder about. I think this book would have been way more interesting if she had shared more about her interactions with other stars and how they treated her, how they lived, and there were some giants in her heyday. For instance, she mentions Elizabeth Taylor's Sunday lunches (who knew?) and doesn't say anything else about it. All of these celebs live in this special little world, including her, and all they (she) can talk about in regard to it is the bad paparazzi, how good she was in various films, and how she and Bruce would navigate kid's schedules. It's like this big secret. The story of her childhood, while sad, is not earth-shattering, and how her entire life has been a response to that, also nothing new. We watched it unfold as it happened. What would have been interesting is more of the behind the scenes stuff that Hollywood doesn't want you to know; the part involving Joel Schumacher is a good example. She and Bruce came to my hometown and opened up a Planet Hollywood back in the 90's, I think. They brought big stars with them and sold outrageously over-priced tickets to go to the opening. So all of our local celebs and philanthropists bought these tickets thinking they would hobnob with them. Instead they were sent to another downstairs room to "party" while all of the movie stars privately partied upstairs. That's how this book feels. You get to hear about how she suffered, how she feels, what she wants. But there are no interesting details about the privileged life she has lived for the last 30 years. It's just another recovery book and a mediocre one at that.

New perspective on Demi
She really changes your perspective of her. The media never got her story right. I’m happy to have the opportunity to know a lot more. She’s been through it

Not what it seems.
Like me many think, "that person has it made. There so lucky" But, everyone has a story, a past and because of that, we should never judge anyone.

Loved it
I bought this for my holiday thinking it would last a few days but it was so captivating that I got halfway through it when I was on the plane! As another reviewer says, it is raw and honest. I finished it the first day of my holidays as I couldn't put it down! Demi talks about her childhood through to meeting her first husband then meeting Bruce Willis and she gives us a pretty balanced viewpoint. She also talks about having her children, her divorce from Bruce, meeting Ashton Kutcher and the struggles she suffered. It was insightful to read as I remember the headlines at that time and it just goes to show that life isn't always as glamorous for A-Listers as it seems. It is well written and her story drew me into her world. Loved the book, love Demi too. Great read!

An Easy Read of a beautiful Stars' life!
Demi's autobiography is simply an easy read to a very down to earth Star, that simply wanted to have a good secured family life. I recommend it to those who are looking to start reading autobiographies. the tone is light, the length is just right.

Revealing and life-affirming.
Here is a bio memoire, told in her own words, by actress Demi Moore.Although it covers her life, it is written more to present herself rather than the image movies and the media have recorded and shown. It makes little effort to dwell upon her film roles or justify her success and glamour. Rather it is a deeply personal account, a response to the lowest point of her life when she needed help or faced passing away or taking her own life through substance misuse and or with intent.I feel the experience of writing about herself gave her the chance to spend time and discover who she is and what she is a product of growing up and finding fame in Hollywood. In this sense the book is as much for Demi, a catharsis in getting her truth out as well as the usual money generating self publicising biographies. It is a project that reveals a great deal and perhaps in exposing herself rather than conforming or playing a role provides not just insight but hope for others who have shared experiences in their lives. As a fan of her movies she is an accomplished actress, a sex symbol and a powerful woman in my prior thinking. Having read this book, I see the glitz for what it is, the image so far removed from the person and the individual more interesting than any part she has undertaken. This is not a choreographed chronological rise to stardom but a painful journey to self-awareness. Based on pain, hurt, disappointment, abandonment even being pimped. From illness to addiction, searching to self-loathing. Ultimately it is about relationships, human frailty, broken promises and unspoken words.I feel I appreciate her life better, not as a CV of work but of her life roles, daughter, wife, mother and friend. I am glad she didn’t give up, didn’t take on titles others gave her or expected her to be. Demi searched for herself and it is an affirming revelation. It was heart-warming to see the photos at the end reflecting her life story and the closing words of gratitude affirming those relationships that brought the book to print and sustain Demi’s life.
