I discovered the Outlander books after watching the Starz Series. I usually read the books before the show or the movie but in this case I discovered the books because of the series. I am obsessed with both now!!! This is one case of the TV series very accurately paying homage in a way that stays true to the books and Diana Gabaldon's epic vision and imaginative world she has created. I am ahead in the books than where the series is so far and I love being able to discover what will happen to my beloved Jamie and Claire and not having to wait until next season. I can't put these books down! I go from one right into the next with many a night spent reading on my tablet until the wee hours of the morning only stopping when sleep cannot be staved off and my eyelids lose the battle against my desire to read just one more chapter! These books have just the right mixture of fantasy, romance, action, and historical fiction and everything is underlined by the epic love story of Jamie and Claire. There is a colorful and complex set of subplots and supporting characters who almost could warrant their own story lines and separate books. Diana's world is so carefully and well crafted it could go on forever. She could continue to peel back the layers of her other characters and mythic world into an endless series of books and stories as she has already begun to do with some of the spin-off stories like with the Lord John books. I love Diana's writing style and her world and I am so happy to have found the Outlander universe through the books and the TV show which, thankfully, is staying true to her vision and voice.

I started out watching on TV. About 3 episodes in my cheeks were flaming scarlet and I found myself wondering if it was TV nonsense to raise viewership and maybe the books would be more reasonable. Well... they weren't. If flagrant and seeming WAAAYYYY excessive and DETAILED sex scenes aren't for you, you may have to pass on this series. I read the books despite them, not for them. I found these stories to be so well told, the characters so compelling that I stuck with them and enjoyed them immensely. The only disappointment being that the last book wasn't ready yet when I was ready for it. Skill of writing and presentation of this particular world, beyond 5 of 5. Would I recommend them to others? Yes based on the story. But not without significant qualifiers and consideration of who I was recommending them to. But the stories are great.

We have been enjoying the series over the years. My wife loves to read the original story as it was meant to be presented without all of the entertainment field's add ons. We purchased the first series of books and my wife truly enjoyed them. She found a number of places where the filmed story wanders away from the real story. So as this new series moves along we will be up to understanding what the writer really meant. They are paperback books of good quality. Long stories as the books are about double the pages of most normal paperback books. Comes with 4 complete story novels in a collection case to keep them ready and at hand when you want them. My wife is already enjoying them, and I am sure she will be sharing where the story wanders again with me.

The Outlander series is eminently readable, rereadable, and each of the novels and short stories has a permanent place on my Keeper Shelf, both the books that are tangible and those I access electronically. I love the characters, the peripheral ones all the way into the heart of the material: Claire Randall Fraser and Jamie Fraser, lovers and partners who belong together despite the former belonging in the twentieth century and the latter the eighteenth. I absolutely recommend these books to anyone looking for satisfying, rip-roaring, heart-rending, funny, poignant literary genius. Diana Gabaldon’s epic saga couldn’t be more deserving of its popularity. From the beginning, this multi-volume tale erupts with suspense and romance with an added bonus of a rich historical setting.

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series of books have been filled with a good balance of history, suspense, passion, and romance. She gives the readers a creative insight into how life was lived so many centuries ago in Europe as well as America. Each book in this series ties into each other seamlessly. I am glad a made for tv version has been created that follows her books as closely as they can. Her books of course are far better to read with lots more detail, so sure to read the books before watching the tv series. Some parts may be confusing without some prior knowledge. Also try using the closed caption while viewing as well. The Scottish broag and Gaelic sections are a little hard to understand while viewing. This series is very popular. Each season revolves around her books in sequential order (i.e. Season 1 book 1, etc) and is offered through STARZ first then Amazon videos. Get the books and read them first, then kick back, relax, and enjoy the movie version too!
