vivid!
Everything in me says I am by Lisette's side until I close the book and reality takes over. So vivid, beautiful, heart wrenching! The book takes you through a time not usually spoken about. Brought to life. Mesi!

My history my people
We celebrate May 18,1804 but we forget the sacrifices that were made to get to this point. Amazing read. Thank

I love this book!
The prose the author used is so lyrical and beautiful, it's almost like poetry. The stories are vivid and the narrative fuels your imagination with both horrific and touching images. I imagined this as a movie in my head.I read the French version beforehand and the English version captured the author's original words. Brilliant!

It's not the most engaging book to read as it ...
It's not the most engaging book to read as it is difficult to tell the difference between a flashback and the presence. Regardless, it does the job to tell the struggles of slaves in Saint Domingue around the time of Makandal. The fear of Lisette could be felt in this book.

Great history, excellent translation
For those who want to know more about the "Black matters movement" from the very beginning and why. This book shows how black people arrived in the USA from a woman point of view. Sad but necessary.
