Grand Sophy, The

Great characters and story, marred by jarring racism.
After enjoying another of Georgette Heyer's books (Venetia), I decided to read The Grand Sophy because the book's heroine appealed to me. The characters are well-written and wonderfully witty, and although the writing style can feel difficult to get into at first, it quickly engages you.My main issue with the book is the casual racism and the walking racist stereotype that is the Jewish moneylender. I appreciate that this book was written some time ago, but it's quite uncomfortable to read, especially if you're hoping for light, feel-good romance. For this reason, I cannot bring myself to recommend this book, despite its good points.

Absolutely brilliant
This is the first historical romance that I have read. My review is spoiler free. The style of the language took a little bit of getting used to at first but already I've grown to love it. As a result of enjoying this book so much, I will definitely be reading more of Georgette Heyer's.I love the detail in it and there is a sprinkling of humour through the story. A great cast of characters. As I wasn't sure what to expect before I began reading it (other than it being a historical romance) I'm so glad that I did choose it.

Prompt delivery
This book was delivered early, is brand new as described. I am delighted to renew my acquaintance with The Grand Sophy and would recommend the book to anyone wanting to escape for a while into a delightful world, it is extremely well written and researched, the characters warm and believable whilst the story holds tier interest from beginning to end.

Charming, lively, entertaining throughout
This was my first taste of Georgette Heyer's writing and I was delighted. It is entertaining, light-hearted and sparkles throughout with Sophy's mischief and sense of fun. It is full of wit and banter, nothing troubling happens and the story unfolds pleasingly. It is easy to read but not simplistic and I picked up some new words and historical detail along the way. Having since read 'A Convenient Marriage' I was a little disappointed that GH's books aren't all this engaging but 'The Grand Sophy' would make a great gift or cheering read.

Just delightful- a wonderful read.
Georgette Heyer is my favourite author and every one of her books is a joy. This one is one of my favourites! Whichever one you choose you won't be disappointed.
