What battery are needed

Per manufacturer you must have a 6 volt 5 amp battery to work properly! 6V 4.5amp will not work properly, I know this from experience.

Will this broadcast Buck Yum and similar products with peanuts in it?

I now have 3 of these feeders and have only used corn. I am sure shelled peanuts would work, but have no idea about the Yum. These are the best feeders I have used and the 15 gallon is much better size for the way I use them. Holds enough for at least a month.

How long does the battery last?

6 to 8 months. Have had it running year round for 2 years and only changed the battery a few times.

can it be installed without the directional attachment?

Not advised. The feeder is designed to be attached to a pole or tree, the directional application is the best way to distribute the food or attractant.
