This book is abridged from the author's full-length version. The more violent or sexual parts and the section about wolves have been removed, but it's still an amazing book.

What a beautiful glimpse into the lives of elephants and whales. I loved both sections, but was drawn in by the things I learned about whales. Their connectedness to family, their ability to show what seems to be emotion, their communication. I learned so much and was moved to tears at a couple of parts. I have even listened to the website mentioned orcasound.net to see if I can maybe hear these beautiful creatures. I bought this for my daughter, but ended up reading it for myself. Would recommend, especially for animal lovers.

I've read the unabridged version of Beyond Words numerous times, because I used it as a text for a class I was teaching. After each section, I'd bring in an elephant and a wolf researcher, as well as a volunteer for a Puget Sound orca research program, to "bring the book to life."I got this version to read to my 5 year old, but it can't capture his attention compared to, say, The Lorax. Suffice it to say that I will keep it on the shelf, knowing that its day will come!

A great read for young and old alike! A grand adventure of animal feelings and behavior. Yes, animals have feelings! Everyone should read this book!
