Great Workmanship, Missing the Whimsy
I've had a Tilley hat for fourteen years, worn it all over seven countries, and it's never let me down. I run it through the wash, and it still comes out looking brand-new. That said, my faithful 2005 Tilley hat is brown, and doesn't match much of my wardrobe. So I bought a black one, and now I swap 'em out, as needed. The new one arrived with the same excellent workmanship and attention to detail as my old one. But there was something missing in the new one—the tag stitched on the underside of my old one, visible only when the hat is off, was written with a sense of humor, proclaiming among other things that the hat was "Handmade with Canadian Persnicketiness." As a Canadian myself, I would agree that's one of our national virtues. The new one had no such good humor on its tag. It was all business, fully forgettable. (I wear the hat most days, and I've already forgotten what's there, besides a small Canadian flag.)Also, within the hidden pocket in the crown of my 2005 hat was a tiny plastic bag with a perforated sheet of paper inside, folded into small rectangular cards, each with something clever about Tilley hats, made for sharing with someone when you got a comment from a passerby. And the company was wise to include them—I DID get comments and questions about my hat, often enough that I long ago tore off and gave away ALL the little cards that came in that little baggie hidden away inside the crown. These good-humored little cards turned me into an evangelist for Tilley hats, and folks were delighted when I would hand them one—it was like a little magic trick, that related to our conversation. I don't know if I ever sold a hat for them, but I do know the experience added some dash and sparkle to my interactions around the hat. The new hat? No witty perforated cards, no little baggie. What they did, however, was to stick a little BROWN exterior tag on the back of my new BLACK hat. I think it had the company name, maybe a little hat icon. I'm not Minnie Pearl, so I cut it off right away. After all my kvetching, the Tilley is still an excellent hat, and I expect to get well over a decade of good use out of my new black one, as I have with my old brown one. The design is good, the materials comfortable, and it's all stitched together well. What's missing is the sense of humor—the fun. It's as if the good-natured folks that were running the business retired, and the new generation who took over are just counting the cents it cost them to stitch that funny tag inside, or print and fold those clever little giveaway cards. Instead, they stuck a tiny brown tag on the outside (of a black hat) because it was cheaper, and the marketing department told them it was good branding. I submit to you that the air of whimsy which surrounded the 2005 hat, THAT was good branding, and it was worth the extra pennies. The new hat is just as practical, but as a traveling companion, it has less personality. Whenever I glance at the hidden tag on the underside while hanging up my old Tilley hat, it gives me a smile. The new Tilley hat has lost its lightness of heart, and for me, that's why they've lost that fifth star.

I like this hat a lot.
This is a great looking and fitting hat. I did expect the brim to be a tad more sturdy in the wind but all in all I would recommend theTilley LTM6 Airflo Hat - Black to friends and family looking for a nice sun/rain hat.I am a Security Officer for a Country Club and Golf Course and this hat really goes well with our dark navy blue uniforms.I've received nothing but compliments from friends, family, coworkers and club members.Thank you.
