Will this connect somehow to a typical air compressor at a gas station for use?

No. it needs to be screwed to the air hose as a fitting. I carry the following product when i ride - it can be used at the gas station as an extension of schraeder valve. LUMITECO 2 PCS Locking Air Chuck with Air Hose and Standard Tire Valve Fine Thread, Air Inflator Hose Adapter for Twist On Convert to Lock On Connection I think it's about $10

Does this chuck lock on the stem?

It doesn't lock onto the valve stem. You must apply some pressure to hold it in place.

dos tHis thread same size as CO2 cartridges?

I'm amazed to see several CLUELESS replies. Please, if you don't know and won't research, please don't just guess. First answer, NO this is made to fit a Schrader valve thread which is 0.305" x 32 T.P.I. A very very oddball thread that isn't used for any other thing. CO2 cartridges (the small ones) use a 3/8-24UNF thread.
