Whichever way you fix it, there is a gap between the shelf and the wall. The first two photos are of these brackets. The 3rd one is of another bracket. Compare them and see the difference.

Design is good but the size is too small.

Shelf brackets for <4.5inch wide shelves
The design of these beautiful, sturdy brackets is such that the shelf has to be wedged between where the bracket is screwed to the wall and its upturned end. This limits the shelf width to <4.5 inches.
