It all began long ago. The milennium had only just turned over. It seemed like Y2K was only yesterday, but in truth, that had been two years ago. On this fateful orbit of the sun, the world was given something it didn't deserve.Shrek. A smash (mouth) hit. The heartwarming story not only of a scrappy startup studio rend from it's mother studio Pixar, but of the world's favorite big green guy as he stumbles into a life-changing series of events that not only cause him to question what he is, but what his purpose is. Little did I know that this would be the kickoff of a long series of events that led to one amazing evening.Fast forward 15 years. Shrek has now starred in two more films, severals shorts, and countless internet memes. 16 year old me had no idea the memes would go this far. Shrek became an inside joke among me and my closest friends, one that to this very day lingers on just as potent as ever. In a seemingly unrelated idea was tossed up among me and my ance-ridden Round Table.An idea to prank a drive through. We had the idea, but no means. The concept was simple: buy goofy costumes, wear them while going through local drive through, be reasonably annoying, and move on, caloric bliss in hand.But what costumes? The pesky plumbers? Wacky horse masks? Many ideas lived and died, but none stuck, as none of us were yet legally trusted in the pilot's seat of any American two-ton personal transportation pod.Skip ahead to July 2019. At a fateful gathering of the now adult Council, the idea was tossed again in passing.But this time, it stuck. Stuck like superglue absentmindedly slipped between a user's fingertips.We had the means. I could drive. We all had jobs. We were responsible adult human beings. What could stop us?Ah, yes, the design of our cunning disguises. The original ideas were tossed once more. Japan's most popular italians. Frighteningly outdated equestrians.But this time, our humble green knight's name was mentioned.And it's mention caused a stir among the ranks. Everyone loved the idea. I loved the idea more and more just thinking about it.Flash forward to October 31, 2019. The Three Bodongos were gathered once more, in full uniform. Green shirts, brown pants, and atop our skulls the beautiful image of the great ogre himself. On the radio, a once forgotten song poured from the speakers, pushing to the absolute limit of OSHA volume standards. Windows down, heads swaying, and cash in hand, we pulled into the Dairy Queen drive through."Hi, welcome to Dairy Queen, how may I help you?""Oh, 'ello there!" I belched, doing my best to imitate his golden voice. "I'd like three cheeseburgers, triple ONIONS!"Silence crackled through the intercom for a moment."Excuse me?" She responded, appalled."Triple the onions!""You sure?""Yeah!""That'll be..."The memory trails off here. Soon, we found ourselves dancing like the fools we are in front of embarassed DQ employee, who could barely contain herself as she passed our greasy bag of calories into my hands."Thank ye'!" I bellowed, my poor impression still hanging on."Bye-bye!" the youngest Elder shouted from the backseat, as we rolled gently out beyond the window and into the sight of bewildered bystanders.And so the evening went on. Three more grease factories had the blessing of meeting the gang that day, along with hundreds of trick-or-treaters and their lifegivers. Many laughs were had that day, so many that, for some time afterwards, our throats burned from it, which was exacerbated by the mountains of onions and mass produced meat patty we proceeded to consume.That day has a title, a title that will forever hang in the halls of history as one of the best days of my life:The Shrekoning.
