Miles Davis had a deep love and respect for boxing, seeing deep parallels between 'the sweet science' and his own relationship with music. One of Miles' favourites of his own recordings was the 1971 soundtrack to the Bill Cayton documentary about Jack Johnson and he was inspired by the political and racial subtext of the legendary boxer's saga. Culled from the celebrated expanded project 'The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions', released in 2003, and name-checking a number of pugilistic legends ('Ali', 'Sugar Ray', 'Duran', 'Johnny Bratton'), these funk-infused recordings rock harder than anything that Miles put to tape. Featuring a sterling line-up of musicians (Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham) and a legendary cover photo of Miles in the ring captured by Jim Marshall, the release finds this music issued on vinyl (in brilliant yellow) for general release for the first time ever.

The Sound and The Fury.....Miles Davis
There is a certain exhilaration and joy in facing the darkness of life full on. That's what Miles Davis's jazz/rock fusion music has always done for me. It's defiant and true...When I want to listen to sounds that move me and shake me (without intruding vocals and lyrics) I turn to Miles. His music speaks volumes without saying a word. This tribute to Jack Johnson and other fighters and artists is a very unique listening experience. Similar to "Bitch's Brew" but more intense and darker. The big difference is the drumming and the guitar work. The key here is the improvisation and none of these musicians sounded as good as when they played with Miles Davis. The excellent improvisation allows you to listen to many takes of the same theme and not get bored because there is a difference in each take. He holds the whole thing together with his mournful, evocative and powerful trumpet. You can listen to it straight through or mix it up like I do. Love it. Great production and a very handsome box set. Probably my favorite box set of all.The complete sessions of "In a Silent Way", "Bitch's Brew", "At the Cellar Door" , "Jack Johnson", "On the Corner" and "Dark Magus" represent to me the pinnacle of Mile's music. No one but Miles Davis made this kind of music....no one will again either. But I like all of his art....from the beginning until he died. His art, his music and legacy live on.Also, if you want to know more about Miles the human being and artist I recommend the Autobiography and the book "So What'.....written by John Szwed. Davis was a flawed human being. Has there ever been an artist that wasn't?

stunning
Miles ahead! Nothing but a jam session! Peak of his prime! No words to describe! I really did not know Miles was this experimental ( yea I know where have I been ) In some ways better then complete sessions of Bitches Brew ( most ways actually )

Super Miles Pacheco!
hey!this is a complete glimpse over an specific opus of this great musician. they say that jimi hendrix's music influenced miles davis in unsuspected ways; they even made some jam sessions in electric ladyland though it seems that there are no recorded evidence of this. hendrix where a major sonic influence over several musicians in different genres.in these five discs you will find some of the best music; it is also an historical record because it shows us the development between fussion jazz: it's not complete rock nor complete jazz, just GREAT music!if you are hesitating, thinking "well, perhaps i can make it just with the single disc", don't limit your experience and get the complete sessions. you will find great material here that is not in in the single record. i bet that if youe get the single edition, you will be asking yourself, utterly curious about the complete sessions. so don't be shy and get this box set. GREAT price, isn't?

Great fun listening to some master musicians
I love this set - each CD packed with music, 5 cds... some of it rambles, some of it bounces, but all of it rocks. There's even some very nice blues on here.I suppose this is a relative of having DVD movies with the outtakes added in at the end. There are variations on variations on these CDs of various grooves laid down - the very first CD has piles of Sonny Sharrock goodness messing with his echoplex - and is my personal favorite.I don't know what people are thinking about when they say things like "never meant to be heard" - why wouldn't music aficianados want to hear master musicians at work?well, perhaps that's where the line should be drawn. If you are fascinated by music, musicians and how pieces are created - this set is for you. It's all in the variations and nuances of technique and style ... each take a little different. Some A LOT different.it's a beautiful and very affordable pleasure - go get it!

The Gods at play (again!)
Miles and Co. take you by the scruff and say "We're going for a ride!". And what a ride. Sure, there are repeats and thematic echoes along the road but the ride is never, never dull and there's something to enjoy all along the way to the end of the journey. This is music that is bold, adventurous, dexterous, sassy, sharp and sometimes so downright brilliant that you just have to laugh. It jumps, pokes, scrapes, swings, sways and blows. I have always loved the original album and now with this complete set my appreciation and enjoyment has increased immeasurably. Don't worry about the nay-sayers who decry the multiple versions of numbers in a row. Regard those versions, as someone else here has aptly described them, as one long tune with repeated motifs and variations on a theme. Like 'The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions' this is The Gods At Play.

No Better Box Set Exists
I've purchased many a box set, and I have to say that this is my favorite box set of all time. On all the CDs, I don't skip a single track! CD 4 is an especially nice surprise because of its overall mellow, sometimes ambient sound. Don't be put off that (for example) there are 5 tracks for "Willie Nelson." Just consider it one long Willie Nelson jam...all the tracks are great in their own way. This is also very true for the "Go Ahead John" tracks, as well as others. I also love the Bitch's Brew box set, but I do skip a few tracks here & there on that box set...therefore the Jack Johnson box set, where no tracks are skipped, must be characterized as my favorite box set of all time.

this has been (for decades) crazily under-appreciated
if you're lookin at this review . . . you probably love the dark prince . . .this set cooks like nothing i've heard since 1972 (initial release) . . . when miles wanted to be a rock star.for that development, see "miles, live at the fillmore.!"

Superb chance to listen to peaceful master work
This recording is a "complete session" set; so, it includes experimentation and iterations, but these are so good. All of the musicians are top-notch and solo magnificently. The music is a flex point in Miles' oeuvre: it's introspective, peaceful, and melodic. I can listen to some of these disks over and over with a deepening sense of musician interplay, blues, and exploration.

Intensely creative period
Mile Davis was an intensely restless spirit, and here is proof enough with a 5CD box set covering just February-June 1970 in a period where he was looking to put together "The greatest rock n roll band ever". Miles had spied the success of artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly and The Family Stone and James Brown and wanted some of that success for himself. Featuring nearly six hours of material 2.5 hours are entirely new and exclusive to this collection whilst a further 2 hours were previously unreleased in full. Aside from different takes of tracks there is a generous helping of entirely new material in the form of "Johnny Bratton", "Archie Moore", "Sugar Ray", "Ali", and "The Mask", of which parts 1 & 2 bear no relation to one another. It's a mouthwatering prospect for any fan, but perhaps gets off to a slow start with six takes or remakes of "Willie Nelson" totalling 40 minutes. Only one of these takes had been previously released in full and as a document of how Miles searched for the groove he was after its interesting enough, but perhaps a little repetitive. Disc 1 ends strongly, with four new tracks, three "Archie Moore's" and a "Johnny Bratton".Disc 2 suffers a similar fate, with 45 minutes of "Go Ahead John" starting proceedings, but here the groove is clear, with John McLaughlin to the fore and the band evidently enjoying themselves with an almost straight rock track. Again it ends with new material "Duran" and "Sugar Ray".Disc 3 contains the April 7th material which Teo Macero masterfully cut together to make the "Tribute To Jack Johnson" album, but it's intriguing to hear in its original form. The box set definitely starts to deliver by now an this is a rich seam of material.Disc 4 sees a change of pace with the first of the studio material that would form parts of "Live-Evil", a world away in form from the Jack Johnson material but taking place in June, showing how quickly Miles' direction changed. The bulk of Disc 5 is the original masterwork "A Tribute To Jack Johnson" album, but it starts off with the two part previously unheard "The Mask". Part 1 doesn't feature Miles and is probably the most discordant, 'out there' piece ever to be released under his name. Part 2 however is a deliberate, almost metronomic piece that quite methodically builds and is a hugely unexpected treat. This is not a compilation for a casual fan, rather the Miles Davis completist. It is fair to say that playing the set in the chronological order presented requires a little dedication, but one which richly rewards by revealing working methods.
