Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (Hackett Classics)

This is the first work I've read by Hume, and I'm now committed to reading Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding as well. Written in the form of a Platonic dialogue, Hume uses a back-and-forth format to explore nearly every one of the most commonly addressed objections to monotheistic religious belief. That Hume does not seem to have been an outright atheist but something more akin to a Deist is really besides the point--he reasoned as far as humanly possible in regard to truth in religion almost entirely without the aid of scientific substantiation, and simply went about the task of questioning whether much of religious belief actually made sense in light of reasonable analysis. Truly a remarkable mind and a major heavyweight in the history of scepticism.

Just read it or avoid it altogether. Either way, Hume's arguments will inevitably reach your ears and open your heart.

Hume is under-rated possibly? He wrote his works in the face of great pressure not to. Good to read if you have any philosophy interest.

David Hume is such a wonderful writer. I have not yet finished the book, but it is fascinating.

Had to read this book for school and I hated it. Such a boring book and hard to stay focused to finish it.

In my opinion, besides the Trial and Death of Socrates, this is the single best introduction to reading philosophy. Clear and well written dialogue about causality, and the boundaries of what we can know regarding any rational belief in a higher power.

This book contains clear summaries of the standard theistic arguments, and devastating counter-arguments. There are responses to the design argument that you will find nowhere else. It is worth reading and re-reading.The section on the problem of evil contains one of the most profound (and poetically beautiful) statements of the suffering inherent in the human condition I’ve ever read.
