Q: As a a firefighter i need a radio that can hit repeters and will last a long time?

Firefighter, thanks for your bravery. This radio is for Amateur Radio communications ONLY. It has no applications for commercial or public safety use. Of course, if you are not already a ham, you can join the millions of world wide hams and enjoy the hobby and public service on a personal level. When used properly by hams, the radio can access local repeaters. As for lasting a "long time," if it is battery life that concerns you, it depends mostly on the transmitting time. It is difficult to predict that and certain other variables. When operating in the field, spare battery packs are recommended.

Q: How do I hit a plain non-dstar repeater with this?

The D74 out of the box is ready to be set up for analog repeaters. In other words, analog is the 'default' mode. The D74 has to have the Digital D-STAR mode enabled to use D-STAR repeaters. Q: How good is the receiver, especially for SWL? The specs look good and I understand a bar antenna is used up to 10 Mhz.

Please note you can switch from the bar antenna to the antenna connector on the top of the D74 and use a long-wire or any antenna that covers the 1-30 MHz spectrum you wish to listen to with the appropriate connector to improve low band reception. However, if SWL is your _only_ interest then the D74 probably not a good fit. You would be better served to spend the purchase price on an excellent portable or desktop SWL only no transmit receiver.

Q: Are firmware updates / downloads compatible with Mac computers?

I couldn't find an option for a mac in the firmware updates it's all windows
