i don't think Santa liked me very much
Well, it said it was for ages 8 to 80. I fall close to the high end of that. I was looking for something to do to keep my mind and fingers active and I figured this was a possible option. I never had an erector set as a child...i don't think Santa liked me very much. But now I'm retired and don't have to depend on Santa. What a joy it was to open my treasure and start figuring out things. The first thing I thought about was how much more advanced an 8 year old must be today over my day. But with a little help I was able to figure out things pretty well. I completed my first project today...I didn't bother my wife all day...she was relieved. There is no scientific research to back this up, but I did keep fingers and mind working and it was much more fulfilling than watching TV. I felt good all day and was proud of my accomplishments. I'm looking forward to the next step. As for the product, it was well made and everything worked as advertised. It was double boxed and I think that was because the inner box was pretty much destroyed. The plastic case it came in had some defects but a little duct tape fixed that right up. (Macguiver would have been proud) I had noticed a number of complaints from other owners but I haven't seen any of those. Thank you for a good product and a very nice time.

Very nice quality parts
Very nice quality parts. Great storage case with divided sections for organization. Great instructions for projects to build. Those little nuts for the tiny bolts are just too difficult in tight spaces for my 11-year-old grandson's fingers at this stage. I find it can be challenging for my own fingers at times. We'll try again in a few months.

Great Set - not so great instruction booklet
This is a well-made, very creative set. I like that the pieces are largely metal - it will be a very long-lasting set, and the variety of fun projects you can make with it is fantastic. I also love that it comes with such a sturdy, wonderful organizing case! My only criticism is the instruction booklet - the steps are not very well defined, and the projects are quite complicated. I bought this for my very mechanically-inclined 7 year old - and while he loves it, he can't do it without constant adult help, and even the adults who've helped him have to really study & wade through the unclear directions. I know it says for "10+" - but I doubt even most 10+ kids could do this without a lot of help.

Perfect gift for you builder.
The erector construction set is perfect for you little and old builder. There are a lot of pieces but it makes for the perfexr gift. The pieces are strong and think so it makes building easier.

A Must Buy
Wow, what a fun kit. I've spent hours relaxing and putting different projects together. You can follow the instructions that come with the kit or let your creative side go crazy. The motor is powerful and all of the pulleys work great. Even for an older person like me, it's a ton of fun. I have very fond memories of erector kits when I was a kid. This brings a lot of those memories back. Glad I found and purchased this. The portioned slots in the carry case help keep parts separated and easy to access. This thing is great and well worth the money. A must have for those who used and remember erector sets.

Curiosity and skills
Greatest Christmas gift! This stole the show Christmas morning for my LEGO boy. He is 10 and love to build and this New style was a hit. He loved all the different working machines he could build. This took it up a step in creativity. Perfect for a curious mechanic of the family.

High quality parts but no gears or plates.
Like millions of adults, I look back fondly on my years playing with Erector/Meccano sets. The meccano glory days for me were the early 90's, and I had an Erector Set 6 and maybe two 3's with missing parts. I still have that kit, though most pieces are rusted or broken. I've been waiting for my son to come of age, and it looks like that time may be now. He's 5, and I don't want to introduce it too early, but when he discovered my kit he was begging me to play with it. I gave him a test. If he could fasten and tighten two metal strips with a nut and bolt, I'd get him a kit of his own. I'm really impressed to say that he did it! This kit is much like my Erector Set 6. It comes in a nearly identical case. The color is different, and the layout is slightly different (no space for the old useless drill thing). I never really liked that case though, and I don't like this one. You can close it, and it'll keep all your pieces inside, but they will all roll around and get into other compartments. It's hard to believe that they were unable to design a better case without this flaw in over 20 years. Anyway, the kit itself has some pros and cons. Pros: -The pieces seem very high quality. Higher quality than my childhood set. The sharp edges are gone and the finish is really nice. (This is only for this 25-in-1 set. The other sets are mostly cheap plastic and the pieces aren't general purpose.) -Many pieces have a better design. The motor has bolt holders so you don't need to have hands on both sides to tighten it to another piece. The rods are slightly flat along the length so it's easier to affix a pulley such that it won't spin in place. -Everything seems compatible with my old kit, and the manual has part numbers for every part. Those numbers match my old kit when the two kits have the pieces in common. There's a website in the UK where you can buy original-used and reproduction parts. (meccanospares dot com) -The Meccano website seems to be willing to send out replacements for lost, broken, or missing pieces. -My kit arrived with no missing pieces. Cons: -There are no gears. I feel like this was one of the crucial aspects of this toy. They've been conceptually replaced by pulleys. It's nice that pulleys are still there, but the gears opened my mind as a kid. Maybe they don't want to deal with oil to lube them. Well I never did as a kid. The parts did eventually wear and break, but if my kid spends half as long playing with this toy as I did I'll buy him another one. -No flat plates. The sets of the 90's had these yellow metal and blue/transparent plastic plates. All pieces like this are gone. You can only make objects that are frames. There's no making walls. -No long pieces. My old kit had metal strips as long as 25 holes. The longest here are significantly shorter. -There are still 640 pieces---exactly the same as my old erector set 6. BUT if you compare the piece counts, you find significantly fewer pieces of substance. There are more nuts and bolts, more washers and plastic stoppers/spacers, but there are fewer metal strips, fewer flanged plates, and fewer building platforms. -This is a minor complaint. The motor/battery assembly is all one piece. The older kit has two wires coming out of each motor and a battery pack with two terminals out the side. You had to strip the wires and bend them around the battery terminals. I'm sure this simplifies play for a lot of kids, but how are kids supposed to be introduced to electricity? I gave this kit 3 stars. Honestly maybe that's a little harsh. The kit does what it claims to do, and the pieces are higher quality than before. I'm sure my kid will love it, he was so excited to open it and start. Children can learn so much from this kit--better dexterity, better spacial reasoning and better planning. They can get a feel for which direction you need to screw to tighten loosen, begin to understand pulleys and motors. It's pretty much endless. But I feel like there's so much missing. And there's no good way to fix that with money. Meccano, you're sitting on a gold mine. Your toys created a generation of engineers that are now parents with deep pockets. Quit making plastic, single use garbage, and get back to the basics. I don't care what it costs, I want my kid to be able to experience Meccano in all its glory. Steel isn't that expensive anyway. At $0.25/lb, you don't even have a dollar of the stuff in the kit. If you don't Iron Commander/Steel Works/IQ toys, etc. will take your lunch. They already sell more for less. You have no intellectual property to protect you, and only one product that is worth a damn--this one.

Fun project for young and old!
Was a Christmas Gift for our grandson age 11 years old. He and his grandpa spent 2 days building a truck. He was very thrilled with the Erector set. Not sure he could have done the project with out some adult helping.

Bought for my 9 year old daughter. The box comes in a convenient case with instructions to build a number of items. My daughter was able to build all by herself so adult supervision is not going to be required. The build relies on allan keys and the items being built are quite technical. It proved to be a good challenge for her and can entertain for an afternoon. She has really enjoyed this as an alternative to Lego.
