Q: does it work for wood?

Yes, the TCHD2L2S3BTS works for Wood.

Q: How do you identify what full tension is on the springs? How many turns? What's the best way to identify this?

No idea, what I did was to set the tension, by trial and error, so that the door won't close too slow, to allow pets to run out or too fast to prevent door slamming and breaking other parts

Q: I have a double trex aluminum gate attaching to 4x4 posts covered with trex vinyl post. Will these hinges work for my setup?

A more appropriate hinge would be the TCHD2L2S3. The TCHD2L2S3 has wider leafs so that the screws are spaced farther apart to reduce stress on the vinyl to prevent the stress pulling the screws out. This hinge can work if the aluminum is sheathed very snuggly by the vinyl, but you'd need to be able to confirm that before going with this model of hinge.

Q: Tchd1l2s3bts shows mounting holes in the picture, however the diagram shows 3 mounting holes. which one is correct? this is a soft close?

There are 3 mounting holes on each side. The soft close depends on how you set the spring tension.
