Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women

Opinionated author
This news broadcaster is very opinionated on the relationships between models, designers, and photographers. It does feel like there is a lot he wanted out there in the book but couldn’t say despite the title. So far I’ve found it most interesting that models dated 1. Wellborn 2. Photographers 3rd architects. My uncles cousin is Bruce Weber. I wish Mr. Gross would tell all!

It's modern history in just the perspective of a single business.
I bought this book after coming across the story of Gia Carangi, and got interested in finding out why is this world of modeling so different from mine. I should say the book appears to be very researched, but how can I really say? Most of those people I never heard of and it sure needs us to keep taking notes in order to not lose track of so many names and dates and facts... it gets kind of tiresome after a while. It's modern history in just the perspective of a single business. It sure puts a shadow on the appearance of glamour we, of course, associate with fashion magazines, beautiful people, clothing and accessories - because it focus so much on the negative aspects and the ugly parts it misses out all the cool bits which I'm sure are quite a lot. Nevertheless it's a "study" book and we draw many conclusions from it.. like, when one dedicates life exclusively to the hedonistic pursue of a certain aspect of beauty there's surely the risk of failing to live a complete and rewarding existence. And the obvious conclusion is: it's not solely the looks that bring you happiness as its not solely inteligence, friends, richess or hard work... a combination of more than one of these factores will eventually bring you the balance for a fulfing life. I enjoyed this book but I don't believe I'll be re reading it.

Fun read, horrible quality book production!!!
This review will be a bit unusual, Model is an informative and fun read, I recommend it, but I purchased this book because I'd had a copy years ago that was lost and I wanted to read it again. The new copy from Amazon is just horrible quality, the print is so faint I can't read it without eye strain!! I guess the overall decline in quality of manufacturing these days is now extending to books...in the future, I'll stick to Kindle versions!!!

Best Book on the Modeling Industry, Hands Down
This is the best book on the modeling industry that I have ever read, without a doubt. This book is thoroughly researched and detailed, and spans the very early emergence of the modeling industry at the beginning of the 20th century, to the establishment of modern model agencies. From Eileen Ford to Casablancas to Frances Grill at Click, this book covers the diverse approaches to female beauty that the industry has taken over the years. The title of this book makes it sound like it will be negative and depressing - it's not. Yes, there are a few "me too" moments, because the industry was not always well defined, and some people took advantage of that. But that is not the focus of the book, by any means. What this book is really about is the emergence, growth and definition of a new and previously undefined industry. If you are interested in the modeling industry, you will love this book!

Mostly about models from pre 70's era
I thought this book would focus heavily on models of the 80's and 90's, but it's actually more like a history of modeling. Much of the book seemed to center on modeling/models from the 50's. These figures weren't familiar to me and I wasn't interested, so the book felt like a waste. I was kinda of shocked because the author was so ubiquitous as a go-to authority on modeling during the 90's. When TV tabloid shows needed to interview someone about models, they'd go to him.

Interesting read
This book does exactly what the title says, it reveals the ugly side of the modeling business. However, it is an older book so you won't hear any recent names. There is another book out there, "Shut up and Smile" that covers more recent models. But the writing from that book is no comparison to this one. This book is by someone that knows how to write and the stories are very in-depth which can only make the book better. The pictures are also better in this book.

So-so account of the vagaries of the modeling world
I'm not quite sure why this book didn't really do it for me. I guess I expected a more in-depth study of the actual modeling industry from an author as accomplished as Michael Gross. Instead, this read as simply a series of essays about particular models, photographers, and other fashion industry participants. It was mildly interesting, but it could really have packed a punch by following up on the vignettes described with further insight; perhaps by re-visiting some of the participants years later.
