I did not know that Doyle had such a great understanding of the US
This is the first Sherlock Holmes book that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote. What makes it interesting to me is the juxtaposition of the parts involving Sherlock, which take place in London, and the one from the US showing the background of the crimes. Before reading this book, I did not know that Doyle had such a great understanding of the US, its culture and nature. I highly recommend it.

The first ever Sherlock Holmes yarn!
Great story, great mystery. The only reason I don't rate it 5 stars is because the author was maybe 50% correct on his Mormon history and criticism. But, give him a break. He didn't have Wikipedia to help his research or Google Maps to help him understand the geography of the Great Basin. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a master. I am off to the next Sherlock Holmes tale.

The First of Many Mysteries
For anyone who is a devout Sherlock Holmes fan, this is the book that started it all. Introducing Dr. Watson, Holmes and Watson take on a mystery that spans two continents, love, revenge and Mormonism. Hang on to your hats and jump on in.

Great read!
This was the first time I read an Arthur Conan Doyle book and I loved it! Great from beginning to end. It was interesting how he (seemingly) totally changed topics in part 2, but it all came together in a suspenseful and exciting way.

Introducing Sherlock Holmes
This Wisehouse Classics edition has the original illustrations, which being in black and white do show up perfectly alright on a standard kindle e-reader; however if you are viewing this on a tablet device for instance, you can enlarge these pictures. Here we have the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, in this the first of only four novels as the rest of the tales were short stories. Nowadays everyone has heard of Holmes, but this was published with very little interest from the public. One reason for this may be that apart from ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ the other novels have never proved as popular as the short tales. Another reason also is rather ironic as mention is made in this book of Lecoq a fictional French detective who was arguably the most famous detective in the world until Holmes eventually usurped him from his place, and the creator and author of him and other crime tales, Emile Gaboriau, in which the structure of this novel does bear some resemblance to its format.Watson returns from Afghanistan suffering injuries after the Second Afghanistan War. Looking for somewhere to rent in London a former friend and colleague of his points him in the direction of a certain Sherlock Holmes who is looking for someone to share rooms with, thus creating that famous partnership that we are all aware of. It does take some time for Watson to realise what his flatmate does for a living, but he does soon pick up on his rather vain conceit. With a mysterious murder committed Watson finds himself with Holmes investigating, whilst both Gregson and Lestrade from the Yard of course mess things up with false conclusions. Not as well written as stories that were to come later this still does make for an enjoyable read as we see Holmes in his element, solving crimes that seem to others to be impossible of solution. Also, for those who are coming to the Sherlock stories for the very first time this does show you how they came to be living and working together. In all then this is still very much an enjoyable read that should give you much pleasure.

Superb
I have several editions of all Sherlock Holmes books. Some are better than others. This edition is excellent. Not only is the text handled well, but the graphics, albeit small, are a joy. Most of all it's a wonderful tale.So go for it.

Game of two halves
Really enjoyed the first half of this, much less so the second; here the narrative dragged and featured too little of Holmes and Watson for me.

A Study also in intrigue.
Sherlock Holmes is brought to life along with Dr. John Watson as this two part book takes the reader through the account of paternal love, religious bigotry, devoted love and also definite or questionable murder.

Timeless classic
So refreshing to go back to the original story, and great to be able to get the ebook for free. Hadn't read this for many years, but it's timeless in quality and appeal, and I'm now going to work my way through all the Sherlock Holmes stories

Great, easy read.
I must admit, this is the first Sherlock Holmes book I have read. After reading an emotional book, I wanted something light so I thought I’d give it a try. It was definitely worth it as it was a short, quick, easy and enjoyable read!! Just what I was looking for.

but it was still an excellent read.
This Sherlock story has been done in the films so often that the suspense was taken out of it, but it was still an excellent read.
